Full Circle…

Years ago, I temped for someone that was on vacation at M.D. Anderson in the department that handled the writing and editing for a lot of the doctors there. I loved it, and I was so good at it that they actually offered me a part-time job working with the department that handles promoting their annual Christmas cards. Unfortunately, I needed a full time job at the time, so I couldn’t take something part time.

Over time, I worked at the law firm I was at for 5 years for some time with the Corporate Communications department, helping them out with making demo websites for some of the largest clients. I handled writing up content for the sites, and I also helped them with their descriptions of what we could offer. I loved the creative aspect of the work.

When I started Sudsalicious, I wrote all the content for the site. I also helped out with my fragrance supplier’s website, Bramble Berry, both doing design work and writing content and fragrance descriptions. Some of my work still exists on the site, even years later.

Moving on to working in the web world, I was in sales – writing proposals and working with clients. I never knew what type of website I would be working with in any given day – I had corporate sites, sites related to printing companies, and even one client that wanted to set up a gay matchmaker site. (Including porno shots that people submitted of themselves.) Fast paced and changing was my favorite thing. Eventually, I moved in to project management – and thanks to the poor attitudes of many of my co-workers (2 hour lunches with no regard to the project deadline will drive me mad pretty fast!), working in the web world lost it’s luster – even though I loved what I did.

That moved me back in to the legal world – but there isn’t much creativity required in drafting discovery responses. I loved it in many ways – people respect deadlines, I find the law very interesting, and the variety of clients was fun – but I really needed this creative outlet on the side.

(Leslie, if you’re reading this – stop now. I don’t want to come across as too zealous! *wink*)

Last week, Leslie e-mailed me about a need for a temp copywriter at her company. I didn’t know a lot about the company, but a chance to WRITE? I mean, really? Could it be a dream come true?

Then she called me today and told me more details, and even now an hour later I’m buzzing like a bee. They do a huge variety of work, and she needs someone that can shift gears as needed. I’ve checked out their website to get a feel for what they do, and … wow. I’m just giddy! They actually had an employee leave last week (thus explaining the sudden need for someone to fill in) and who knows – maybe if it is a good fit for everyone, it could turn in to more than just a temp job. Yes, a shift in my plans – but we have always said that if the right job came along we would rethink our plans. Even temping over the next few weeks or months would put us over a minor hurdle of running two households on one income between now and the wedding.

I’m meeting with her and her co-workers tomorrow at 10:30 – we’ll go from there. One perk? I don’t need to send her writing samples because she reads my blog every day. Seriously now, could it be a dream come true? I feel like I’ve gone full circle – I have always loved to write, and I love getting in to a project to learn all I can about it to learn what I need to create for it. I’m still almost speechless.

I’m telling you – door closes, window opens. Seems to happen every time. I’m so giddy that it makes me want to wiggle in my chair! (tm Emily)

Is it Just Me?

Earlier, thanks to J-Mo Jen, I started browsing through the Well-Designed Weblogs Volume 2. Now don’t get me wrong, there are some really nice sites on that list, and I am sure they have great code integrity. (Something I plan to getting back in to over the next few weeks.) However, I noticed something as I started to scroll down the page.

They all start to look the same.

There are some exceptions on the list, and some are truly unique. I noticed them. Some are prettier then others, and several “new finds” had some cool information – I’ve wandered off in to new lands, and it’s a good feeling. I’m updating my “Cookie Crumbs” over there on the sidebar again in case you have stopped reading them.

But the colors all started to blend together, especially in the middle of the list. The formats were just … the same. Somedays, I just like to see something that stands out. Has some zing. Is different from the rest of the crowd. Content is ultimately king, but having some unique “flavor” to your weblog is important too!

I Have a Confession…

I have a confession. I hate audblog posts. I probably wouldn’t mind them quite so much if people came back later and included a written version of what the wrote, although I realize that would defeat the purpose. I surf in silence – my favorite laptop has one speaker and it’s on the bottom. Yeah, great design engineering, but I have no other complaints and the laptop itself rocks.

Plus, what about all the people that blog surf at work? They are left in the dark too.

I have now listened to my first Audblog post – I have been protesting them for at least 6 months. I still don’t like it.

I Guess I Need to Go Back to School…

It’s the last weekend before Science Fair (yay! It’s almost over!) and the projects for this “phase” are for Jason to write his speech and put together his backboard for the fair on Wednesday. After going back and forth about the speech, we moved on to the backboards. We printed everything out, I had my Olfa mat, ruler and cutter ready, and then I learned something.

I can not cut a straight line.

Sure, I can cut a straight line with my awesome and amazing editor scissors, but with the mat and the rotary cutter – forget it! Gah! I’ve done several practice sheets (after butchering the original printing of his Purpose and Hypothesis – thank goodness for computers!), and they all turn out the same – very crooked.

I guess I need to go back to school to learn to cut a straight line. Maybe Michaels has some crafty classes that can help me out in the future. For today, we’re going to end up getting my Mom to help – she’s the cutting pro!

Just to Make You Jealous…

I would like to point out to those of you living in the really freakin’ cold states up north that I have not turned on my heat yet this winter. Not once. Not at all.

Originally, I didn’t turn it on because the weather was bouncing from cold to hot – so once I would have heated my apartment, I then would have had to cool it back down. Then we had a stretch of cold days in the 40s, but my apartment stayed in the 60s – so I just put on a sweatshirt and socks. Now I’m holding out for the sake of lower light bills and keeping my allergies from going crazy. Something about turning on the heat ends up making me hellaciously sick. I figure that I’ve made it this long and been relatively healthy this winter (aside from tonsillitus; my allergies have been mild this year) so what is the point in messing up a good thing?

This post will come back to bite me in the ass in August when it is 100 degrees outside and there is no shade and we’re running the AC to cool a whole house. Oh well, for now I’m happy and comfy in my little apartment, and I’m still not turning on the heat.
