No Rain = JOY!

No Rain!

Emily was just so happy to see that instead of rain, there was a lovely blue sky and beautiful puffy white clouds. I was just so happy to catch her next to the window with that amazing light coming in. Another straight out of the camera shot – I love it when we get incredible light like this!

More of the wedding photos online at the wedding blog.

My weddings are now out of order. This is making me twitch a little bit, but I’m trying to get over it. I’ll be wrapping up proofing Sarah & Sean’s wedding in the next day or two – the first section of photos is already online!

The NEW New Office!

Clover
Cross-posted with the wedding photography blog – sorry about that if you subscribe to both!

A few weeks ago I posted about Caroline Collective, where my new office was scheduled to be this summer. Fate had other plans for me though. Funny how things work out sometimes.

Back in December, as Mike, Jason & I left 11th Street Cafe and headed down to Lights in the Heights, we passed a building on Studewood with a sign over the door that said “Clover”. I thought to myself that it would be an awesome location to be in someday. I dreamed of someday moving to The Heights here in Houston.

In February, I left my space at Two Be Wed as it wasn’t a good fit for my needs. I wanted a private space where I could meet with clients, work between meetings, and one with more flexible hours to better fit my schedule. Right as I made this decision, I learned of Caroline Collective. It was a perfect fit for every single one of those needs. I picked out a future room for myself and started making plans.

At the beginning of May, while Caroline was still being worked on, I received a call from Mitch, the coordinator of the Yale Street Market. I had told Mitch last year that if he ever knew of a space in the Heights that he thought would be a good fit, to let me know. He had found a space. I told him about Caroline, but then let him tell me about the space in the Heights. Then he told me the location and the name — and I realized it was the exact place I had spotted back in December.

The owner was out of town for a family emergency, but when she returned I had a chance to see the space. She got help from an interior designer at brosa.com.au, and the front room is set up as a showroom. Moving back into the space, she had several rooms she wanted to rent out – including two rooms in the back that were perfect for what I needed — and gave me something I didn’t even realize that I wanted before the opportunity was there – a space to shoot! With windows on both sides of the room, the light in there is awesome!

I signed the lease last Friday and picked up the keys. Saturday evening involved moving in furniture with the help of Mike, Kenny, Elaine & Tara. Sunday involved shopping for a small couch that would be a good fit for my meeting room. Yesterday involved putting the couch into the space, and then some more shopping with my Mom where we found a different rug for the room, throw pillows, a trunk for a coffee table, and other decorative goodies. Now I just need to put in a ceiling fan, end tables, lamps, and order canvas prints for the walls and a special printer for 3D printing which are the latest on the market, you can actually print anything and have it physically with you Setting up the studio room will take place in June, but I have some great ideas!

The hardest part of the whole thing? Breaking the news to Matthew, who is heading up Caroline Collective, that I wouldn’t be there. I’m so very glad that they are bringing co-working to Houston, and I support them 127% (if not more) and look forward to dropping in from time to time. I am grateful for his support and understanding though that I had to make a business call and go with what I knew was ultimately the right decision for my needs and the future of my business.

I’m so excited about being a part of Clover location and being a part of the Heights community! I am there on an appointment only basis at this time, but feel free to contact me to set up a time to meet! The new address is 1024 Studewood – in the Heights!

Signed. All Mine.

These Are the Days of My Life…

Women & Men

I have a confession. I love to edit in little photo editing marathon sessions. Now that I’ve picked up on this, I’m working on a schedule to take advantage of it. Especially since over the next few months I have a total of 7, possibly 8 weddings to photograph. Most of the engagement sessions are done for the spring though, so that makes things a little lighter.

I am testing out the beta of Lightroom v. 2.0 now – and I just have to say that it is SWEEEEET! I am loving it! It is so cool that you can spot edit now, tweaking exposure in just certain areas of a photo. At this point, I’m only opening PhotoShop while proofing to add my logo to images before posting them online. Nice! It makes things so much faster!

Of course, I’ll still be doing the final edits before printing client work in PhotoShop – there is just some magic that can only happen there.

Today I wrapped up editing on Kara’s bridal session at Champion’s Country Club and Kara & Bryan’s engagement session in downtown Houston. Of course, I can’t post the bridal photos online yet, but the engagement session was such fun, I couldn’t wait to share it!

New editing schedule:
– Weekend shoot
– Proof Monday & Tuesday (ideally the wedding I just shot, but I know I’ll have other things to proof too.)
– Blog about event on Wednesday or Thursday
– Upload files as needed, burn backup copies to DVD, backup on external drive
– Fridays are my day off, along with most Sundays
– Lather, rinse, repeat!

Here are a few from Kara & Bryan’s shoot – there are more over on the Wedding Photography blog for you to check out!

Co-Working is Finally Coming to Houston!

I’ve been sitting on this news for a little while, but now that there are posts about it and photos on Flickr, I feel like it is safe to spread the word. Co-working is finally coming to Houston – and I’m in on it!

The Caroline Collective is being built out as we speak, and one of the courtyard offices is going to be mine, all mine! Dwight Silverman wrote about it earlier this week on the Houston Chronicle’s Techblog, if you want to learn more.

I had a spot at Two Be Wed here in Houston where I was meeting with brides, but as my contract with them came up in February, I started to review the past 6 months before I signed another one. I realized that often I have meetings in the evenings or on Sundays, both of which were not times that were good for meeting there. Also, I couldn’t stay there to work if I needed to get out of the house – I still had to go to a coffee shop or other location. It just felt really limited to me. At about that same time I found out that the Caroline Collective was under way, and I jumped on it. I went by, selected my office, and am now just waiting for the build out to be complete!

It is going to be so fantastic – and I can’t WAIT to be surrounded with such creative geeks while I work. As an added perk, I can use the grounds and my office for photo shoots when needed, which is really wonderful for me. It is going to be so great! Soon, my wedding photography will have a place to call home!

Seal of Approval!

WPJA

On Thursday, I received the email I’ve been waiting for – the exciting invitation to be a member of the WPJA – Wedding Photojournalists Association! Oh goodness, ever since I discovered the WPJA last year, I have wanted to be a member. So when I got the news – I was so excited! I think I have told every single person I have talked to since then! What an honor, I can’t even put it into words.

Today I’m already at the hotel where I will be photographing Andi & Jason’s wedding — I covered the rehearsal dinner last night, and Mike suggested that I just stay here since I could get a room at the block rate and it would save me from driving home at 10:30 and leaving 12 hours later to start shooting again. It is going to be a long day – the ceremony will be at 7:30pm, and dinner will be served at 10pm, with the reception scheduled to end around 1:30am in the morning! Tons of celebrating, dancing, and rejoicing by all – it is going to be a blast! Elaine will be with me of course, and we’re being joined by my friend Jennifer Wilson who is coming in from New Braunfels to shoot with us. Tonight we’ll be crashing at the hotel all over again so we don’t have to drive home. So worth it to avoid the drive time!

Wheee! It is going to be a long day, with coverage starting late this morning – but I’m so excited about it all!
