Noodly Appendage Class…

I was thinking about it today while I was in Biology – after the first week, it really isn’t too hard to understand the teacher, and he does a good job of teaching even if the way he pronounces “protein” is strange. I was talking with B., the other “returning student” in my class, about it and she said the same thing. He goes over what is in the book, and he uses it well – so if I’m not clear on something I can always refer to the book to clear it up. He is very knowledgeable about the subject, so I’m happy with the class. (A bit sleepy sometimes if he goes on too long over cell structures, but happy.)

I didn’t register for classes until August, and this was the only one I could fit into my schedule and keep my goal of being out of class by 12:30 every day. I want to make sure I’m home (and have a little study time) before Jason gets home. So switching classes wasn’t an option – but it is ok, I really feel like I’m learning in his class.

As for the rest of the students though? Yeah… Today was one of those days where my “returning student” status was pretty obvious. B. and I were both laughing and shaking our heads as we came back inside from our break. (We get a 10 minute break since it is a class with a lab.) As we walked up the stairs, the kid in front of us was talking about the party with “100 jello shots and 10 cans of trash-can punch” and how he “really didn’t know how he got home” and … wow. I know I had friends like that when I was a freshman or sophomore in college, but … I don’t know. I just found it amusing in a sad way.

It really is interesting to see college from this perspective. I saw a girl in the hall last week that was wearing a guy’s class ring in a big chain – hot! Don’t you normally stop doing those things when you leave high school? I’ve also discovered these two guys that sit in the commons area around lunchtime and play some sort of card game. It looks like something like when little kids play Yu-Gi-Oh, but with cards that have some halogram on them? I don’t know what they are. But on Tuesday I heard the one guy telling the other how he couldn’t make the move he was going to make, and there was some serious debate going on about it. I was almost expecting to see the D&D dice as I walked by today. I’m going to have to get a photo on Tuesday. Really, I can’t resist.

So Perfectly Tiny…

After seeing the iPod Nano the other day and reading Derek’s post about it, I wondered how long it would take for there to be a “get this for free” site to sign up for one. Kymberlie told me about it last night, and I signed up today! You can sign up too and get your very own iPod Nano just for refering your friends!

I’ve read sites that claim this is a scam. No, it isn’t. It is however something that you’ll have to ask your friends to sign up for. It does work – I can show you my 60gb Photo iPod if you would like to check it out. Just remember the important rule – only one per household. They will check. And they watch IP addresses. (It isn’t good to have a family member with the same name in the same town, etc. sign up. Sometimes even if they are in a different town, they will question it.)

Come on, you know you want the iPod Nano. It’s wonderfully miniscule. So magnificently dainty… Sign up!

Click, Click, Click…

No time to type. Up to my eyeballs in dustbunnies and yarn, with only a break for margaritas.

I decided today to clear out the dining room. We’re having a birthday bash for me on September 24th, and it needed to get done. (Hey! If you’re in Houston, you’re invited! If you’re not in Houston, but you want to come, you’re invited too! E-mail me or leave a comment. I’ll hook you up. Evite to go out tomorrow.) Now there is furniture to move, which should be fun since I’m still not allowed to lift anything.

I also did a lot of knitting. I’m wrapping up the first baby blanket, I’ve finished more baby booties (no photos because they look the same as the other one), and the other day it suddenly hit me – I have to mail the Sockapaltwoza sock on September 15th! So I’ve cranked out the first sock (I’ll Kitchner the toe tonight), and I should have the second one done in plenty of time. Whew!

I did take a little break last night – our friend Mandy is in town from Seattle, and we couldn’t pass up the chance to see her. Dinner, margaritas, then two more margaritas, and then when I was a bit tipsy I called Kymberlie. She has saved the voice mail messages I left – I’m not sure just how scared I should be of that fact. Oh well, we don’t go out too often, and the margaritas were so good.

I’ve approved the pending comments that were waiting here, and I still have several e-mails to send out. If you’re waiting for a mailing address for crafted goods for Katrina survivors, I will be writing you tomorrow. Thank you for all of your support with this!

Now there is a Chemistry book calling my name…

‘Reliant City,’ population 24,900…

The city officials have now given a name to the Astrodome & Reliant complex – ‘Reliant City,’ population 24,900.

They say that with 24,900 total residents, the Reliant Park Complex is now the largest evacuation shelter in U.S. history.

They are planning to set up typical neighborhood amenities such as a Welcome Center, Banking Center, Reliant Town Square Park, Reliant City Medical Center, a Transit Center with Metro Transit Authority and HISD school bus stops.

The Reliant Town Square will include a playground, sports field and laundry facilities. The Salvation Army will construct several refreshment centers east of Dome City.

Construction completion goal is Friday.

According to the Harris County Department of Education, more than 4,000 school-aged children are expected to register this week and will start classes Sept. 12.
