The Rest of the Story…

The Ring Originally I had planned on replacing the blurry photo that is below, but I’ve sort of grown attached to it now so I just can’t do it. Instead, I’ll just post more photos! Great trade-off, right?

I also planned on posting the “rest of the story” last night, but there just wasn’t enough time. I still wanted to record it for posterity though, so here it goes…

Wednesday, New Year’s Eve, I had to work for a half day. I had a doctor’s appointment scheduled (no more tonsillitis! Yeah!) and lunch plans with Ash. Afterwards, I went to Foley’s to do some last minute shopping for shoes to wear to the New Year’s Eve parties we were going to later. Mike seemed a little frazzled when I said I was on my way home after that, but then said that it was ok. He told me that we would have to leave a little early for our dinner reservations at Josephine’s because he had promised to take Jason to Kaveh Kanes for hot chocolate. “What?!? If he wants hot chocolate like he had at Starbucks, just take him there now! I don’t want to leave early to go to Kaveh Kanes!” He really insisted that we had to go there because that was what he had promised, so I finally agreed.

I headed for home, got ready to go out, and two hours later I was heading back for downtown. Nothing like going in circles, is there? Traffic was a lot worse than we had anticipated, so we got in to downtown just in time for our dinner reservation. However, Mike was still heading for Kaveh Kanes. I was bewildered.

We arrived and he went to the counter to get hot chocolate for Jason and coffee for himself. Then he returned to the table with the drinks.

He turned to me and said how Kaveh Kanes was where we first met and how even at that very first meeting he had felt like he had always known me, and how we have always felt like old friends. He went on to say that he wanted to start the New Year’s off the same way he wanted to start all the other years off – with me. The best way to do that was to ask me to marry him – and then he went down on one knee, pulled out the box with the ring inside, told me that he loved me and asked me to marry him.

After a moment of stunned silence (and a quip about how I had to think about it), I said yes.

He went back to the counter and Greg handed him the four dozen roses that Jason & Mike had “stashed” there earlier in the day. It turns out that Jason was in on Mike’s “behind the scenes” planning and had kept it all a big secret. Afterwards, we headed off to Josephine’s for dinner, where they had a lovely table reserved for us – decorated with rose petals that Mike had brought by earlier in the day in the shape of a heart on the white table cloth with a huge candle in the center. We eat there often and it’s a small family-owned restaurant, so they were more than happy to coordinate with Mike, hold our table, and the owner even made a point of coming by to see the ring and congratulate us both. After that, it was off to the New Year’s Eve parties, calling friends along the way to share the big news.

I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect evening, and every New Year’s Eve we will celebrate the special day all over again!

A Whole New Year…

ring.jpg

It’s a whole new year. With a new year comes new changes. Mike asked the big question last night on New Year’s Eve. I said yes. Then after a nice dinner, we got to share the news with our friends at Michael & Ginger’s party and Kenny & Elaine’s respective parties. I can’t think of a better way to start off 2004!

More details later, and I’ll replace that blurry picture with a better one tonight. For now we’re in downtown checking out the new Light Rail and enjoying some time at Kaveh Kane’s.

Happy New Year! Good-bye 2003!

Quiet at the BPC…

Our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at my parent’s house turned out to be quite wonderful. So good, we decided to stay over there on Christmas night too so that Mike would be on “my side” of town and we could hit Fry’s early on Friday morning. We played LOTR Trivial Pursuit with Jason on Christmas Day (“Santa” brought it for him) and he almost beat Mike & me! It was a really nice day for everyone.

Thursday night my Mom got a phone call from one of my aunts. My Grandmother had had a stroke on Christmas Day. (They think that she had one previously earlier in the month, but the nursing home said she didn’t.) My Mom talked with my other aunt that lives there in North Dakota to get more details.

Friday morning my Mom received word that my Grandmother had passed away at 5:30 am. It’s hard to explain and it may sound really strange, but it’s almost a relief – she had Alzheimers, and she has been a shell of her former self for many years. The last time I visited North Dakota, she was not able to really talk other than a few phrases that she used to frequently use. She hasn’t “known” me or Jason for years. I made my peace with it years ago – but as anyone who has dealt with Alzheimers first hand will probably say – it’s like watching someone that you love die, even though their physical being is left behind.

I know she is in a better place. I am at peace with that.

The end result is that I’ve felt very introspective for the past few days, and it will probably continue for awhile. I have family obligations to take care of, a son to spend time with, and a household that needs some attention too. My online time will be very limited over the next few days or weeks. If you need to reach me and you have my phone number – feel free to call. I’m not sure how often I’ll even be checking my e-mail. Sort of a hiatus from electronics – I just need some digital down time. I’m sure it all makes sense – I just need to regroup, refocus, and find some inner peace that I’ve lost somewhere along the way in the past few months.

Thank you, thank you, thank you again to everyone for your support – I truly appreciate it more than I can express with words, and it is warming and touching to sense the sheltering warmth that I know surrounds me, both with my friends here in Houston and around the globe.

May you find peace ahead in 2004…

Back, Safe & Sound…

Natalie was going to meet me around lunch time to pick up her soaps and lotions, and she generously offered to pick me up and drive me over to the Metro offices because they are almost on the other side of downtown from my office. I was able to pick up my purse without any problems and everything was there in it – I thanked them about 20 times, and I plan on writing a long, gushing letter to Metro about how great they are – and how thankful I am.

After that, Natalie and I went over to Pappa’s BBQ for lunch … yummmmm … and then she dropped me off at my office and I headed to Skoogie’s to get my hair cut. I needed a fresh look, but I’m afraid he might have cut it too short. Oh well, it’s hair – it will grow.

Now it’s time to finish wrapping the gifts and then head over to my parent’s house. Let the holiday festivities begin!

Thank you everyone for your kind words, well wishes, and general support – I can’t tell you how much it means to me. I hope your holidays are wonderful and filled with light and joy!

FOUND.

Metro just called me back. Not only has my purse been found, they got someone to deliver it to downtown right away (it normally takes a day or two), and it is waiting for me at the Metro Lost and Found desk.

I can breathe again.
