I Love to Write…

Considering the number of writers that I have met in the past year and the fact that in a way I am an informal writer by keeping a blog, the I Love to Write Day is an interesting concept. Mark your calendar and let’s celebrate!

Check It Out…

Last week I went to Kroger and was surprised to see that they had cash registers set up where you could check out your own groceries! You pulled up your cart, scanned the item, bagged the item, and then scanned the next one. At the end it prompted you for coupons and then it let you pay. There was one clerk there to watch over the four “self-checkout” machines. I wonder if this will be the way of the future? It was sort of cool, but I’m not sure how much I liked it. I guess once you got used to it it would be fine. Maybe Wal-Mart could set these up so that they could have more check-outs open? Then the lines wouldn’t be so long. Now that would be nice!

Zapped…

I feel like someone has zapped all of the life out of me. I was so tired last night that I started nodding off at 7:15! I stayed up later then that, but barely. Today I slept soundly until 9am, and I was completely disoriented when I woke up. I thought it was a weekday, I was confused, then worried because it was 9 and I was late for work, and the phone was ringing, and finally I figured out that it was Saturday. After I got up and ate breakfast I still couldn’t keep my eyes open and slept on the couch until lunchtime. Even now I just want to lay down and go to sleep, although I’m finally feeling a little better after drinking a Pepsi. I’ve been pretty much caffeine free for the past 2 weeks, but I did have a Coke at lunch yesterday and all I can figure out is that the lack of caffeine was dragging me down. Ugh. I might just have to take Excedrin daily so I can function, because being sleepy like this sucks!

Have to Disagree with You…

This commentary from Jason Kottke regarding his site: “I don’t have categories, keywords, or other metadata for posts and the search mechanism is not optimized for weblog use (it searches by page, weblogs need search results returned on a post-basis). My site isn’t smart…it doesn’t make connections between current posts and older posts (either on my site or elsewhere) like it should (and like Google and Amazon do with their content). I can’t even display single posts on their own page. It’s pretty pathetic. None of the tools out there offer exactly what I want. Movable Type does categories, but specifying multiple categories per post is a bit of a pain…and there’s no search or room for other types of metadata.”

Sorry Jason, but I hate to break it to you… MovableType does all of those things for me and more. You can search thanks to Jay. You can link to individual posts. You can leave comments. You can view by category. It’s all a matter of taking the time to use the software. But you can have all that you wish for and more…

I was lead to that post of Jason’s from this post on “The Weblog Foundation”. Which leads to an interesting concept – do you blog for profit? I don’t – I blog for me. Thanks to that search feature, it’s a great way for me to find things I have linked to so it’s a wonderful resource to me. Like I said, it’s just a matter of how you use it. So – what about you?

(Edited: You can follow the MeFi thread on this here if you are interested. I found it quite amusing. Thanks to wKen for mentioning it!)

The Lost Cat…

Jason & I went to Wal-Mart to pick up a card early Sunday morning before lunch. Later on during the afternoon I realized I hadn’t seen Murphy in quite some time. I asked Jason where he was and he said he didn’t know. I always check when we have the front door open and make sure none of the cats slip out. Where was he? Shut in my closet, since he likes to just slip in there when I’m not looking? No. Under my bed? No. In Jason’s room? No. I was doing some laundry, maybe he’s went in by the washing machine? No. I left for dinner at my parent’s house with the sinking feeling that he must have slipped out when we got home from Wal-Mart, because I couldn’t find him anywhere. I wanted to look some more though before I broke the news to Jason that his cat was missing. As I returned from grocery shopping, I remembered – when we got home earlier, the small coat closet door was open and I pushed it shut as we walked in. Sure enough, when I opened the front door tonight, the closet door was open again and Murphy was laying on the floor! I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to see him since the day we first brought him home.
