Conversations in the Kitchen…

Scene: Jason is sitting in the kitchen, working on his homework. He starts singing the “Poke you in the Eye” song (by the fabulous Flying Fish Sailors) that I use as the Pointy Sticks theme song. I comment that I need to finish the podcast tonight.

Me: Dude, your Mom podcasts…
Jason: *laughs*
Me: You know, there are all these mommy bloggers out there that blog about what their kids do. Like what they ate and if they pooped today. Can I do that? You know, like blog about whether or not you poop? (FYI, he is 14, not 2. So I wasn’t seriously going to blog about his bowel habits. I’m not that mean.)
Jason: *snorting laughter* No. That is just crazy. Those moms are nuts. Who wants to read about whether or not their kid poops? I bet if you look closely at their photographs, the background is a room with soft padding pillows on the walls. That is just insane!

I guess their will be no mommy blogging for me. Although he did say I can blog about his dates when he starts dating. I asked if I could post photos too, with the black bar across their eyes to protect their identity. He said I have to use more than just a black bar. I can give them nicknames though – like “trampy dressing girl” and “geek girl.” Sweet!

Speaking of geek girls, Ann? Jason’s ears perked up when I mentioned that your daughter is in an Anime club at school. He said to get her IM and to give you his IM and they can chat.

Signs of the future – fixing your kid up via IM. Ah, the joys of the teenage years.

(Update: Uh, ok. I fixed all the typos. Dr. Phil was on in the background when I typed this originally, and the Dr. Phil? He makes me a little crazy. Obviously, he was messing with my typing skills. Oops.)

Change is Not Always a Good Thing…

Changes Underway

When Elaine and I went on our Photo Hunt last Thursday, part of our mission was to capture images of the River Oaks Shopping Center. The River Oaks Theater shown here was built in 1939 as part of the landmark River Oaks Shopping Center, one of the oldest shopping centers in the United States. This building, along with the Alabama Theater in Houston, “are examples of late-1930s Art Deco design and are among a handful of viable retail buildings of their age and style in the city.”

Weingarten Realty Investors, which owns the shopping center, has reportedly notified tenants that it plans to demolish the River Oaks Theater to make way for a bookstore and high-rise residential buildings.

Normally witnessing renovation in progress is a wonderful thing. However, there is quite a battle going on in Houston now, as the citizens hope to Save the River Oaks Theater. You can read more about it here.

Help save this Houston landmark.

On an interesting side note, when we were taking photos earlier in the evening we were told by one of the tenants that they were never told by Weingarten that the theater is at risk. Interesting, since that is what the Chronicle is reporting (along with countless other sources) and has been since July or so. They have had plenty of time to correct this with the media if it isn’t true. I think the store owner might have had his facts crossed.

Wikipedia for Houston…

Skyline

My picture is there as one of the photographs for Houston, Texas. Right there in the sidebar, up at the top. (If you click on the photo, you see the credit with links to my Flickr stream.) Sweet! Props to rkimpeljr at Flickr for letting me know!

Wildseed Farms…

In looking up details on the Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) that I posted earlier today, I discovered Wildseed Farms. It is over in Fredericksburg, one of the places on my “things I want to see in Texas” list. (Yes, I have never been – crazy, huh?) Going to Wildseed Farms would be like a dream come true for me, walking among the fields of flowers and learn how they take care of them, although I been reading a lot about gardening at thegardeninghub.com to learn how to do it myself. Just think of all the flower photographs I could get! And there is a live Butterfly Haus! Plus a display garden and walking trails! Not to mention that the whole area gets taken care of thanks to the Tree Removal – Precision Tree Services company which is one of the best ones.

It makes me swoon a little just thinking about it.

(In case you wondered, I replaced the previous coneflower photo with a color-corrected version. I didn’t have time to tweak it this morning.)

The Hunt…

For Elaine...

Yesterday was a full day. First, Katy Blogless and I went to Yarntopia! for their “it has been a year since we decided to open the shop” sale. All of the summer yarns are on sale at GREAT prices. (If you are in the Houston area, it is going on through Saturday, so GO!) 30% off Calmer; 40% off GGH Bali, and Katy got enough yarn for a sweater for under $40. Under $40! You can not beat a deal like that!

Then I came home and made my “Gee’s Bend Inspired” ATCs for the Houston ATC meeting, which happens to be at the same Cafe Express as the Central Stitch & Bitch. I drove to Elaine’s house and she drove the rest of the way, because we had some photo hunting to do at the same time. Before the meetings, we headed to the River Oaks Shopping Center for some Assignment: Houston photos. Then the meetings and dinner, followed by more shots at the River Oaks Theater and then a sign hunt for me. I love the creative spur that I get when I go on photo hunts with Elaine, and it always amazes me that while we are both shooting at the same place, our photos never look the same – we end up capturing different things all the time.

All in all, a great day. Many successful plans completed for me, which was a good feeling. I have just over a week before school starts, and a lot to get done by then. Today it is off to the North Harris campus to get books and meet with the advisor for my scholarship, then another sign hunt, and a quick stop at Twisted Yarns to see the Friday knitters. Then podcasting and possibly more photo hunting tonight. I have my eye on a prize, and I really, really want it.
