Harlot Time!

I forgot to note in my last post – our vacation will not stop me from seeing the Yarn Harlot on her one and only – at last! – stop in Texas in 2006. If you haven’t heard the news already, Stephanie Pearl-McFee is coming to Austin, Texas on Saturday, July 29th. The event is being hosted by the Hill Country Weavers shop and requires that you RSVP as seating is limited and she will only be signing 300 books.

We should all stop for a moment now and ponder signing 300 books. Not just signing our name 300 times, but actually adding a little note to that signature. 300 times. That is a lot of books.

Julia and I are in the process of planning an “after party” for that afternoon since the event is from 10 – 1. Food will be involved, and at the request of the Austin knit bloggers it will be at a location that serves adult beverages. I don’t know about you, but once I see her I will be needing some quality time with knitters, crocheters, and just general fiber fans. So if you plan to be in Austin too, let me know and I will get you the details as soon as we work them out!

Vacation, Time to Get Away…

The great family vacation debate of 2006 is finally over. Yeah, yeah … vacation? Christine! You just got back from London! Yes, yes I did – and we are still going on a family vacation. We decided to pick somewhere not too far from home so we could drive there because even with these gas prices, it is still cheaper than 3 plane tickets. We decided we wanted to go somewhere new. Someplace quiet. Scenic and beautiful. So this year, we are driving to the Ozarks at the end of the month and renting this cabin for a week. We can relax, we can enjoy nature, and we can cook there instead of eating out. They claim that there are almost no mosquitos there, but I’m excited about the screened in back porch just in case.

This is going to be so much fun!

Now which knitting projects should I bring along?

3 Doors Down…

3 Doors Down

On Sunday, July 2nd this house – 3 doors down from ours – was hit by lightning. The owners were not home, but their dogs were. The firefighters got them out in time.

Mike & Jason were not home when it happened, but it is never a good feeling to come home and see 3 fire trucks blocking off your street.

Today, when I returned from Austin, was the first time I saw the damage.

I spent time in Austin discussing my house plans with Tara, pouring over Domino magazines for ideas, working on a color scheme and decorating ideas in my head. I came home, inspired to purge the house. My own personal “Clean Sweep” show. We have too much stuff. Way too much stuff. Not all of it is bad stuff, but a lot of it is stuff that we don’t need, stuff that we don’t use. It is overloading to me. I can’t handle having all of this stuff any more. And as I passed their house and stopped to take this picture, I couldn’t help but think of the things that they lost. Treasured momentos to just basic everyday things.

It all makes me evaluate everything I own with a different eye, wondering if I would miss it if it was gone. Most things I would not miss at all. It is the same feeling I had after Hurricane Katrina. It is time to purge. I’m not using these things, and they deserve a good home. I’m devoting the rest of this week to go through things, room by room. It is time for things to move on.

Ding!

Knitting at Jo's in Austin.

Moment at the Knitflix Movie Night when I laughed so hard I almost cried last night? Loud buzzing noise happens. Everyone looks around to see what it was. (I think it was feedback from an amp or speaker or something – are amps and speakers the same thing?) Out of nowhere, I hear someone quietly say:

Fries are done.

I had to find out who said it. I professed my adoration for her, very publically. And now? The song is stuck in my head. Still, 13 hours later.

By the way, Caro makes awesome bags. Go check them out.

In case you have never seen or heard the “Ding! Fries are Done” video and song, you can find it, complete with lyrics, here. It is wrong on so many levels. Consider yourself warned.

Don’t Tempt Me…

Fish & Chips

Julia sent me an e-mail last night about the Knitting Movie night in Austin tonight at Hill Country Weaver’s. She wrote something along the lines of “Don’t you wish you could be here?”

I wrote back and asked if her offer to come to stay in Austin any time still applied.

I’ve wanted to go to Austin since March to see Tara & Julia. Mike said that once school was out, I could go for a road trip. I got to see Julia a few weeks ago when she came here to go to Ikea, but I haven’t had a Tara fix since she took us in for Hurricane Rita. She came to Houston while I was in London, and we were both bummed about missing the chance. Now I get to see both of them! Wheeeee!!!

Yeah, don’t tempt me. You just never know – I might show up on your doorstep if you’re not careful.
