From U.S., the ABC’s of Jihad – So, we don’t have enough textbooks in American schools. At my son’s former public school (he has been attending private school since January) they didn’t even have a textbook of their own – there was a “class set” so all the work they did was off of worksheets and you couldn’t bring a textbook home at night to study from. (side note: his grades have improved since January, and working from textbooks helps.) Yet we supply the Afghanistan schools with textbooks??? WHY? Not only that, now we are working in a new book supply, because in the days of the Cold War we thought it would be smart to encourage violance and a Jihad with talk of violence and pictures of guns in the textbooks. The Taliban even approved of the American textbooks – what does that tell you? Glad we are striving towards helping the next generation be less militant, as a global move – but I don’t think my tax dollars should be used to pay for it. We have enough issues with schools on the home front. [via Weblogsky]
Google Eyes…
Google Yanks Anti-Church Sites – These sites had anti-Scientology information on them. And the Church of Scientology threatened to sue Google over copyright infringement unless they removed the sites from the search engine. I take for granted that pretty much any site, unless they have code embedded to not be indexed by search engines, will be listed in Google or other search engines. I don’t think it should be up to the search engines to figure out what URLs to exclude, as it will drastically cut down on the free exchange of information that we all know & love. Just another example of abuse of the law. They can’t go after the site directly because it’s in the Netherlands, so instead they are going after the search engine that leads people there.
BUT … now Google has restored some of the the website links to their database after being slammed by free speech advocates for removing the sites in the first place. Good news, but it still troubles me that they were removed at all. [via BoingBoing]
No New Code…
Anti-Copy Bill Slams Coders: “According to the CBDTPA (Consumer Broadband and Digital Promotion Act), any software with the ability to reproduce “copyrighted works” may not be sold in the United States after the Federal Communications Commission’s regulations take effect. Even programmers who distribute their code for free would be prohibited from releasing newer versions — unless the application included federally approved technology.”
Amazing. Simply amazing. Once again the government scares me when it comes to their ideas on technology laws. Here is more informaton on what Hollings’ bill would do. They also want to use this bill to sue manufacturers of MP3 players. Forget about fair use as established by copyright laws, which allows me to copy my own CDs for my own personal use. This pretty much would end that. I understand the issues of concern that one day no one will buy CDs, but there still needs to be fair use allowed. MT 2.0…
I wanted to take a moment to gush all sorts of lavish praise about MovableType 2.0. I love the new interface. I love that I can now ban IPs from commenting. I love how fast & easy it was to install. I love it. Love, love, love it. I love that I can rearrange the MT entry page as I wish. OH! And now when you upload a photo you can make a thumbnail of it at the same time! How is that for cool? Yes, the list of things to like goes on & on. I just read Candi’s post about how long it takes for her to rebuild her blog. Yes, the 2.0 rebuild takes a little longer for me then 1.4 did because now it rebuilds 40 posts at a time. That said, I can do a FULL rebuild of *1480* entries, including individual, daily, weekly, monthly, category archives plus the regular index templates, in under 2 minutes. I timed it earlier when I added the daily archives to make the calendar links display all of the posts for a certain day, not just one. Under 2 minutes is not bad when it comes to that many entries. Other blog softwares would have taken … oh, they would have crashed at about 600 entries, who am I kidding. There are bug fixes that 2.0 addresses. I think it is well worth the upgrade. It was fast & painless, and the latest & greatest ROCKS!
