When Flickr’rs Gather…

Wait, Even More Cameras...

This is what happens when you gather together a big group of Flickr members together all at once. Before you know it, you have a table FULL of cameras. They met up at Franklin Coffee Shop in downtown Houston, but thanks to a mattress catching fire on I-10, Elaine & I were late. Of course, we took a photo of the fire (below) – after we quickly got off of the freeway and on to the feeder road to avoid the traffic on I-10! When we got to meetup, the coffee shop had closed, so we moved down Main Street to Tropioca. After closing down Tropioca, we wandered back to our cars, took photos (shocking!) and then Elaine & I went to Frank’s Pizza for pepperoni rolls. Mmmmm!

Bad fire on the way

Your Assignment, Should You Choose to Accept It…

Glow

I have lots of big plans dancing around in my head. (Really, not shocking. I always have great ideas. I suck at making them happen somedays, but the ideas are great.) One of the things in the works, which we’re not ready to share all the details on, involves printing some of my best photographs. Photographs you might want to hang in your house. But what I consider my best and what the general public considers my best are not always the same thing.

So, if you have some spare time, could you look through my photos and tell me which ones you would want hanging on the walls of your house? You can look through my stream on Flickr, browse the ones that Flickr sees as the most “interesting” using their magic algorythms, or look through Fresh Photography (where nothing is freeeeeesh yet since I haven’t posted an update since Mike fixed the site).

If you don’t have any spare time, but a particular photograph comes to mind as something that caught your eye, just describe it and I can figure out which one it is. The key is that I want to get together a list of 25-30 of my most popular images, and I really need your help. I have faith that you can be more objective than I am about my photographs.

Pixelog is Fresh!

Sweet! Mike took the time last night to tweak the old code for me, and Pixelog is finally in its new home – FRESH Photography. (Say it with me … Freeeeeeeeesh!) I still have work to do behind the scenes and probably a zillion spam comments to delete, but for now – its ALIVE!

Wheeeee!!!

Now I just need to bring back the BigPinkCookie design that uses the thumbnails from over there and I’ll be all set!

Change is Not Always a Good Thing…

Changes Underway

When Elaine and I went on our Photo Hunt last Thursday, part of our mission was to capture images of the River Oaks Shopping Center. The River Oaks Theater shown here was built in 1939 as part of the landmark River Oaks Shopping Center, one of the oldest shopping centers in the United States. This building, along with the Alabama Theater in Houston, “are examples of late-1930s Art Deco design and are among a handful of viable retail buildings of their age and style in the city.”

Weingarten Realty Investors, which owns the shopping center, has reportedly notified tenants that it plans to demolish the River Oaks Theater to make way for a bookstore and high-rise residential buildings.

Normally witnessing renovation in progress is a wonderful thing. However, there is quite a battle going on in Houston now, as the citizens hope to Save the River Oaks Theater. You can read more about it here.

Help save this Houston landmark.

On an interesting side note, when we were taking photos earlier in the evening we were told by one of the tenants that they were never told by Weingarten that the theater is at risk. Interesting, since that is what the Chronicle is reporting (along with countless other sources) and has been since July or so. They have had plenty of time to correct this with the media if it isn’t true. I think the store owner might have had his facts crossed.

Wikipedia for Houston…

Skyline

My picture is there as one of the photographs for Houston, Texas. Right there in the sidebar, up at the top. (If you click on the photo, you see the credit with links to my Flickr stream.) Sweet! Props to rkimpeljr at Flickr for letting me know!
