Informal Survey…

Surfing through a zillion photographer sites for inspiration, I need the opinions of others to find out what you like in a photographer’s website.

Do you like sites that have nothing more than a pretty pretty picture or Flash slideshow on the home page? Or do you prefer them to have tons of information there too?
Do you like a clean looking site with a simple site navigation with dropdowns? Or a sidebar that is minimalist but easy to find things?
All Flash sites? Or HTML with some Flash included for slideshows?
Music when viewing a photographer’s site? Or no music, ever, ever, ever?

If you need to look at some other photographer’s sites to see what I’m talking about, you can check out the zillions that I’ve bookmarked on del.icio.us.

Basically, I want to make changes to the FreshPhotography site to better highlight the options to hire us for other work. We will still continue to sell prints there too, so the existing functionality needs to stay on the current images. There will still be a photoblog with the option to buy. There will also be information on portrait, wedding, and corporate photography. So a lot of things need to be there, and I want them to be well organized.

Now that my missing notebooks have returned from the depths of the underworld in my car, I have a feeling that site sketches are going to be under way soon!

The Accidental Photo Shoot!

Accidental Photo Shoot

Much better if you view it large.

Last Friday I made a quick trip down to Galveston to take shots for my friend Shelley’s storytelling website. While we were up on the rooftop of the Tremont, I spotted this cute couple on the other side. I had snapped a photo of them earlier as they sat by the railing, enjoying the great weather we were having.

As I was switching memory cards, I heard her … Crying? Squealing? Laughing? All of the above? I’m not really sure. It was enough to make me turn around though and start snapping more photos of them. I then walked closer to Shelley & told her that I thought he had just proposed.

We both got a bit teary. Yeah, I’m a sap like that. As soon as we had a chance, we called out to them and asked if he had just proposed. When she said yes, and that he had totally surprised her, we then told them that I had taken photos of them seconds after it happened.

It was a happy twist of fate.

We all exchanged business cards, he immediately asked about buying prints, and she asked if he had planned the fact that I was there too. (Not sure what else he had surprised her with!) I told her he had not – but I am still so thrilled that I was there!

A New Adventure…

Checking Out the New Ring

While Kimberly was looking at me and smiling for the camera, Stephen was checking out his brand new wedding band. We had such a great time at their wedding in February (in spite of the fact that I had no voice!) and we’re looking forward to getting together with them again soon.

After navigating all of the settings and the process for setting up events, I finally have my first event online at Pictage! Stephen & Kimberly’s wedding is not the first wedding I have photographed over the years, but it is the first that I have placed online for photo sales. It is an exciting move to help grow Fresh Photography’s wedding (and lifestyle photography) business. I’ll be using Pictage for all of my events in the future, which will offer my clients a whole number of wonderful things.

Pictage is a wonderful service. They will store all of my client sessions, and allow them to easily order prints in a whole variety of sizes. This event is open for view, but they will allow me to set an event password so that people can only view it with the login information. They not only print the photographs for me, but they will also package and send them directly to the client. They offer fabulous proof books that I will include in all of the wedding packages offered. Their album selection is fantastic. As an added perk for photographers, they offer a variety of events and training sessions – such a wealth of information. All around, I can not say enough good things about them!

A Long Day…

More Sunshine

What was not supposed to be a long day has turned out to be a long day. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed out, I ended up looking at photos on Flickr. I then realized that I have not shared any of the waterlily shots lately, and as my love for photographing flowers is well known, I realized it was time to revisit them.

I discovered last month that infant photography and flower photography are not far apart from one another. There is such beauty in the details. As I return to editing past shoots, I am looking forward to more newborn and infant that is wearing newborn baby hats photography sessions in the future. Have a baby? We need to talk.

April Showers…

Thank you to everyone for deblurking! What fun! So many new sites to check out – I can’t wait to read them all. And for those of you reading, there are also some of my personal favorites that stopped to say hello too – so check out the links!

It was a whirlwind weekend, and there has hardly been a moment to slow down. Tara took us up on our invitation to come and visit and headed to Houston on Friday. Meanwhile, I went and took photos of my friend J.’s three kids, spent some time visiting with J., and then headed down to Galveston to meet up with Shelley to take photos for her storytelling website, Spin Me a Yarn. She is an amazing woman, and I had such a great time with her and her husband. Many magical things happened on the rooftop of the Tremont, which I will share with you in the next day or two.

After our photo shoot, Mike, Tara & Jason arrived and we all went to Luigi’s for dinner after spending some time unwinding in the lobby of the Tremont. A fun little break in Galveston, with perfect weather.

Knitted GoodsSaturday? Saturday was a completely different story when it comes to weather. I normally check the thermometer that hangs outside our back door when I leave. I’ve normally checked the weather online before the Yale Street Market. Not this month. Oops. I knew it was going to rain because Elaine had told me. When Elaine tells me stuff, I listen. (Seriously, Elaine rocks my world.) She told me it was going to be cold too, but we have different views on cold normally – she is cold when I am not – so I figured as long as I had on socks and a sweater, I would be ok. Whoa, was I ever wrong. Seems I missed the memo that the temps were going to be in the 40s! Not the 60s that I was expecting. There were almost no customers, we were freezing, and the rain really wasn’t helping anything. It was a nice treat when Ed came by, as Elaine has not had a chance to meet him in person. I ended up calling Staci for knitted goods reinforcements. She brought me a long sleeve shirt, gloves, a clapotis, and a hat. Then I was fine for the most part – I probably could have lasted the afternoon. We didn’t find out though, as the market ended closing early. We were packed up and gone by 2pm. We sold all of one print by the time we closed.

The perk of closing early was that I got to spend time with Tara, heading to the nail shop for pedicures after I ate some lunch and defrosted. Then we were off to visit with my Mom and discuss decorating ideas for her kitchen, followed by dinner at Lupe Tortilla’s with Mike, Jason & my parents. Mmmm… Lupe’s. Yum! Mike & Jason watched Casino Royale when we got home, but Tara & I did not last.

Tara left early on Sunday, and after I took a nap we headed to my parent’s house for Easter. Delicious food, and it was nice spending time with them.

Now I am making my way through photos. More to come, along with the story of the Tremont rooftop!
