Class, the Lesson for Today Is…

So, I tested out VeoWeb’s other server, supposedly stable while this one isn’t. But it is less powerful, so when I went to rebuild my entries in greymatter to fix path changes, guess what? Greymatter Forum : internal server error when rebuilding archives Yes, the lesson that Candi learned this summer – some servers only grant a certain number of CPU time before it kills the process. Some hosts can handle the larger blogs and the big rebuild. VeoWeb’s Host4, inspite of the other problems last week, can handle it. I rebuilt all of my files last week in order to add the winamp list from DoSomething.

Out of curiousity, Naomi, being the sweetheart she always is, set up a directory for me on her site at Aletia and allowed me to upload greymatter there so I could test it out. Rocking & rolling along, changing paths, just like before … and guess what? It couldn’t handle the rebuild either. It made it farther than I got this morning, but the exact same thing happened – it just stopped. Couldn’t handle it. Ugh. Yes, there are 480+ entries to index. Host4 at VeoWeb did it just last week. It can be done. Is your server up to the challenge? Yep, before I move I *will* test the server out. No doubt about it.

You know I had this problem too, but I’m questioning whether it is a problem with the host. Mine was working fine until I made some minor adjustments to the config and then all the sudden it wouldn’t rebuild. I didn’t add any more posts, so it couldn’t be that I made the limit. It’s just suspect to me. Best of luck getting it to work. I probably gave up on it too quick.

It’s working just fine on “HOST4” at VeoWeb, although Host4 was crapping out (that is a technical term, right?) last weekend. So… I even did a rebuild earlier here to make sure. But the other 2 servers sure had problems!

If you use PHP, which it doesn’t look like on here, but if you used that, it rebuilds a helluva lot faster, and also, if it does crap out, you can still change your archives to match your new layout instead of doing them all by hand if GM won’t rebuild. So that’s what I did. And then just started fresh in a new archives directory.

I use PHP to check cookies & set skins – so I don’t need to rebuild normally. But last week when I wanted to add a line of code I did need to – and if I move I need to because I would need to change paths in the configuration.
