Happy Ears…

*sigh* Depeche Mode in the headphones is making me very happy right now. The song “Somebody” was the song that they played for the first dance at my wedding years ago … and it’s still one of my favorite songs to describe relationships and how I think they should be. Lyrics follow. I’m off to listen to hours & hours of Depeche Mode. Ah, happiness!

I want somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone who’ll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She’ll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She’ll hear me out
And won’t easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she’ll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me

I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and
With every breath
Someone who’ll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I don’t want to be tied
To anyone’s strings
I’m carefully trying to steer clear of
Those things
But when I’m asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I’ll get away with it

Have you ever really LISTENED to this song ? It certainly doesn’t mean what you think it means.
The male character in the song is saying these words at a dinner party to a somewhat naive girl simply to get her into bed…

I’ve listened to this song probably a million times since I first heard it in 1988. Yeah, I’ve listened to the song. The background noise is from the lead singer of Depeche Mode’s wedding. So I don’t get why you would say “he’s saying those words at a dinner party” – the first person that played the song for me was a true and complete die hard DM fan, and I have never heard your version of what the song means.

Regardless, when it comes to music, it’s what a song means TO YOU that really matters, in my opinion. More then what the artist meant when they wrote it – it’s the personal aspect that makes music what it is.

PS – there is no need whatsoever to be “anonymous” here. I’m not going to attack you or anyone else for stating their opinions… That’s why I *have* comments is to get feedback from other people.

OK, now I heard the exact same thing “anonymous” has. It was actually featured as trivia on the radio station at college, so now I’m curious to know the *real* story.

The last 4 lines really go with the “trying to get the girl into bed” theory.

Ah, but that’s what makes you one of the greats, darlin’. You’re so friendly to all the anonymous people out there.

I’ve never really listened to Depeche Mode. I was a heavy metal fan in my youth (Kings Diamond anyone?) And Faith Hill is actually playing on my jukebox right now (I’ve so mellowed in my old age.) But I’ll have to check that song out.

I completely agree about the audience interpretation being more important. That’s the point of all art. It’s half the artist and half the public. Art can’t exist in a vacuum. It isn’t “truth” like math and science. It thrives on subjectivity.

I wonder what I’ll think that song means… hmm.

depeche mode is my all-time favorite band – i have seen them in concert five times, and i own every one of their albums.

“somebody” was one of the songs that was on my wedding video (first wedding), and its still one of my favorites.

i’m not sure i agree with what anonymous said about the song being about words said at a dinner party to a girl into bed. i can say, with absolute certainty (because i’ve heard martin l. gore, the writer of every depeche mode song, say it), is that he refuses to tell anyone anything about any song he writes, because he believes each song’s meaning is up to the listener’s interpretation.

so what does that say about “anonymous?” lol 😉

It’s at least comforting to me that I found, in my quest to find the “story” behind the song online somewhere, a list of the “top 175 wedding songs” – and “Somebody” by Depeche Mode made the list. You can read the full list here.
