Slow Crawl…

Years ago, when I lived in Germany (Illesheim), the speed limit on the base was 20kph. As Mike points out, that’s 12mph. One night I went out with Jen, a friend of mine that was visiting from the US. Well, our Moms were best friends as we grew up, so we were more like cousins (who had to like each other) then friends before her visit to Germany. But that’s not the point of this tale. One night we went out and got shit-faced drunk. Eight sheets to the wind. Seriously trashed. But I didn’t want us to walk home and leave the car at the bar because it was a small base and people talked. If my car was there the next morning, word would get back to my (now ex) husband that I must have gone home with a man. So I drove home. I would NEVER recommend this in the condition I was in, but I was driving 20kph – 12mph! At 12mph, if someone was walking on the side of the road and I came anywhere close, they would have easily been able to run away! I was driving on a base with no traffic, no cars to worry about, and the only thing I had to watch for was other drunk people walking beside the road. Jen was yelling “You can’t drive! Let me drive!” Hell no! She was as drunk as I was, and if anyone was going to wreck my car, it was going to be me! 12mph… it’s almost impossible to even drive that slow! Wow, it’s been 10 years since I left Germany (almost) – where did the time go?!?

Wait where is Germany did you live? I went there last year, Berlin, Munich and I absolutely loved it! I was on my way to Prague actually…How long did you live there? Do you speak German fluently?

Okay, I was kinda thinking about asking you for a ride around town when we’re at SXSW, but maybe I’ll be better off taking a cab. Driving around Austin at 12mph will attract a bit too much attention.

“12mph… it’s almost impossible to even drive that slow!”

I have been thinking about this and realized that that is about the average speed for Marco Island. The speed limit here is 30, but there are tons of cars that just seem to be coasting around, without putting on any gas. It always astounds me. If my car went any slower while I was following them, I’d be backing up.
