Regrets and Moving On…

It started with an e-mail. On Monday, Naomi wrote to me to let me know that she had decided to move back to the East Coast. She told me a few weeks ago she was thinking about it but she wasn’t sure. Everything had falling in to place though, and it was happening. Now.

I guess I should back up a bit. Naomi and I worked together from June 1, 2000 to May 15, 2001. Almost a full year, until the company tanked and we went down with it. It was the same company where I met Kymberlie at. Naomi and I are very different, and yet almost exactly the same. She is the sort of friend whose sentences I can complete, even if we go six months without seeing each other. (Which ended up being our average lately.) We’ve been through a lot together, but knowing that she was right here in Houston, there wasn’t an urgency to see her. Isn’t it funny how people just put things off like that?

So she’s moving to the East Coast. And I’ve been quite melancholy because of it. Thus explaining my lack of posting anything the past few days.

Tuesday night I went over to see her at the apartment where she was staying. Up until the past few days, he seemed to be a great friend to her, very supportive, a good roommate. But something has changed, and we have no clue what or why. A few days earlier, he had started randomly harrassing her. No real reason why. And it made no sense. It scared me to leave her alone on Tuesday night – nothing she said was good enough when he called, and I was honestly afraid that he would become violent. But he said he wanted me to leave before he came home, so we scrambled and loaded up goodies I was taking home into my car, and I left.

Just after I got home, she called me back. He had started yelling at her, saying horrid things. He had taken away her keys, so if she went outside – even to walk her dog – she would be locked out. He was threatening to call the cops. He was insisting that he didn’t think she was really leaving town.

I got back in the car, and with Mike’s help, we got her out of there. Once I arrived, he never came out of his room. I still think it would have been much worse if I hadn’t been there – but I was. I needed to be. Over the years, we have been through a lot together. This time she needed me, and I was happy to help.

Now he is attempting to harrass her via e-mail. He has no clue where she is though, and I am thankful for that. I am drained though. Lack of sleep from the other night, stress, everything all rolled up in to one, I am tired. However, I am happy to know that she is safe and moving back out East. She has a strength that she doesn’t see, but I see it in her. She is a wonderful friend, and I wish her nothing but the best. My only regret is not spending more time with her while she was here.

Speaking of friends I don’t spend enough time with, Mike and I are heading out later to New Orleans with Doug and Chelsey. I’m looking forward to the break from everything. And I have a total of seven cameras packed to take with me, so I’m sure there will be photographs to look forward to over the next few weeks. No, really, I don’t have an issue with cameras. I swear, I don’t.

Hot Date…

Kathy headed up north tonight and we went out for dinner and then over to see “Finding Nemo”. I don’t think I’ve been to a “kid’s movie” without Jason since he was born. It was really cute – I’m glad I went to see it. I’m even more glad that I got to spend the evening with Kathy! What a blast – she’s a great date!

Kathy and I first met back in 2001 or so, when she ran the Bayou Burb, a group for Houston bloggers. It took us until summer, 2002 to meet in person finally – and I’m so glad we did. If you live in an area with other bloggers, go out and meet them. It adds a whole new dimension to blogging, and it is so worth it. Sometimes you should walk away from the keyboard, get out, and meet the people behind the monitors! You won’t regret it!

All is Good…

Lunch with Chelsey at Pappa’s Barbeque. (BBQ Sandwich, not a cheese sandwich.) The sky is finally going from grey to blue. My skyline is sparkling again. I’ve found helpful information in this interview with Jeffrey Zeldman that will help me explain web standards to the boss. All is good in the world.

For some reason I have this feeling like I should start singing “What a Wonderful World This Would Be” or something like that. Come on and sing along with me…

What a wonderful
wonderful world this could be…

So Much to Do…

Wow – there is so much going on right now I seem to have nothing to say. Jason left Wednesday morning with my parents for a road trip across the country, and I’ve been taking advantage of the down time. They are driving from Houston to Minnesota, over to North Dakota, down to the Black Hills in South Dakota, and then back to Texas. Just under three weeks in a motor home that they rented. They did a similar trip last summer, so Jason was really looking forward to it.

Wednesday night I went out with Sydney. Last night, at the last minute, I went with a co-worker and a friend of hers to see “The Italian Job”. I had seen a few commercials for it and didn’t think they looked very good – however, others had said they really liked it, so I gave it a chance. I’m glad I did – I liked it too. I am a sucker for movies with twists in the plot, and a good chase scene never hurts.

Tonight the plan is dinner in downtown at Josephine’s with “the Friday Gaggle of Friends” (including Mike, Kathy, Elaine, EJ and many others) followed by some time at Twelve Spot, a club on Travis in downtown. I’ve never really hit the downtown nightlife – when I was going to clubs all the time, there was nothing down here! So I’m really looking forward to it.

In the plans for the future? Seeing The Matrix: Reloaded at the IMAX (whoa… big screen!), getting together with J-Mo, making plans with Mike for “Boston Bound, Baby 2003” (If you’re in Boston, please raise your hand – I want to set up a “H-Town meets Bean Town” gathering and I want to be sure to include you!) and deciding if we’re going to New Orleans for the 4th of July.

Speaking of which – I’ve never been to New Orleans, and I’ve wanted to go since I was in about 3rd grade and we studied LaFayette’s travels across America back in Illinois. If you’ve been to New Orleans and have some tourist advice to share – things to see, things to avoid, etc. – feel free to leave comments!

Whew! When Jason gets done with his vacation, I’m going to need a vacation!

Update: I was feeling a bit dyslexic this morning. That’s Boston Bound, Baby 2003. Not 2004. 2003 – August 1st – 6th or so. Oops!
