A Moment We Must Seize…

According to Duhhhbya, “If people want to fight terror, do something kind for a neighbor.” Yes, you two can help fight terrorism in America by devoting two years to voluntary service. Service which will “harness the power of citizens to help prepare their local communities for the threats of terrorism.” All that kept flashing through my mind as I read the article was visions of Hitler’s Youth. Maybe it’s lack of sleep. What does helping my neighbor have to do with fighting terrorism? Am I supposed to suck up to them so I can work my way into their home and make sure it’s not a bomb factory? And I get his political agenda of ” ‘compassionate conservatism’ in which volunteers at all stations of life would reach out to struggling citizens”. Matter of fact, I agree with it to some extent. But I don’t see what that has to do with stopping terrorism. Just seems to me like using a national tragedy to get his agenda passed. And it bugs me. Another thing to add to my long list of things about him that bug me. Yes, it is Duhhhbya specifically; I am about 70% Republican in my thinking, although I don’t vote based on party lines. He, on the other hand, grates on my very last nerve. “A moment we must seize to change our culture”. Uh huh. Whatever.

I think his point is, that a lot of people want to do something to help the country and if you’re not military, all you can do is be vigilant. I agree, it doesn’t have anything to do with terrorism, but I think volunteerism is a good thing in general. If it makes people feel like they’re fighting terrorism, then so be it.

I too am a closet Republican…however, I don’t think (i guess maybe how i read it) that helping our neighbors was part of the agenda to stop terrorism…I took it as part of building strength and unification in our country to help one another get through this….That’s how I read it (but then again, I could be insane since I voted for Gore)

Christine,
Just in case, not sure if my email is getting through its been acting up recently. Some emails have been bouncing back while others aren’t getting through and others have been lost in a void. Just a wondering if you got the last one.
thank ya kindly
🙂

To me, it seemed like he was trying to get the country back into the “buy war bonds, plant a victory garden, pitch in and do what you can for your country” kind of WWII mentality. *shrug* Sounds good to me. :o)
I’m the Key Volunteer for Jack’s platoon, and I volunteer for TAPS.org. While I was doing these things before Sept 11th, they just mean all that much more to me now. I think that kind of thing is what the speech writer was trying to get across.

I agree with the volunteering. I don’t think it should be limited to two years either. I think you should *always* volunteer. But … I still have no clue what volunteering will do to “fight terror”.

“National Service” volunteering is a different ball of wax than just helping out in your community. The Republicans *hated* the idea of national service when JFK created the Peace Corps and even worse when Clinton created AmeriCorps. Now the shoe is on the other foot. All Dubya has done is roll up a bunch of existing programs into one with yet another creepy proto-Nazi-sounding name and try to take the credit.

You know Brian, I thought of that today too! “Wait! Peace Corps was JFK’s idea and the Republicans hated it! What’s up with that?” See? And I just don’t get what that has to do with stopping terrorism! The general rule of almost all philosophies of belief is “do good for others” (the “golden rule” in it’s various forms) so to say that will end terrorism all the sudden? Yeah, and everyone will get along around the globe in perfect harmony. Yep, hasn’t happened in the past 10,000 years – but I see it happening really soon thanks to this plan. Let’s all have a Coke and a smile.

would you people just get off Dubya’s back… the country is in trouble and we are all just trying to make it a better place to live. If you people spent less time complaining and more time doing, this country might be a better place to be.
