Books Crossing Your Path…

“The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them.” – Mark Twain

Thanks to Kymberlie’s nudge when Jason & I met up with her for ice cream a few weeks ago, and again on her blog last week, I finally joined BookCrossing. As I mentioned earlier, one of the main reasons I want to ride the bus to work is so that I have more time to read. This just seems like a perfect fit as I finally get through all of my unread books.

I have already set up the beginning of my bookshelf – tell me, where is yours? I know there are a lot of Book Crossing members out there – I would love to add you to my friends list – and who knows where it might go from there! It really is exciting for me, because the last time I checked out Book Crossing there was almost nothing there. Now it is huge! If you haven’t joined already – here’s your chance!

Wicked Cool!

It’s interesting to observe the life cycle of a blogger. When you first start to blog, you find all of these sites that are new to you, all of these cool ideas, all of these great widgets and so forth. You link to others and leave comments, hoping that someone will notice you.

As time goes on, you become more a part of the community. There are the sites you read daily, and you feel as if they are your best friends, even if you have never met yet. You become part of a social circle – or many social circles. You meet people, you participate in the good, and sometimes in the bad.

Somewhere in there, some people quit blogging all together. Others continue on, although their format and their style may change. They may open up more, or less. Most of the time, you can spot the more seasoned blogger. Hopefully they handle things differently, and most notable is that the things that matter shift over time. It is truly interesting to observe.

One of the things I remember wishing for long ago, when I first started to blog, was to be picked as a “Best of the Cool Daily Pick.” A site much older than this blog, it has been around since 1997. 6 years is forever in Internet terms. Joe Jenett has had other projects that I have participated in, including the Ageless Project. He also had a portal site that is now gone which I linked to for a long time. Basically, he is one of the “old school” people online to me – the ubercool that you can’t help but admire. Faith, Patti, and Miz Kitty are also in this category for me, in case you wondered – people that I thought were hip before I even had my very first web page, long before this blog.

As a fairly seasoned blogger, there aren’t too many milestones left for me. I’ve met a lot of bloggers and I’ve done a lot of things. Today I hit a new milestone though, one I had almost given up on in a way. It feels so good and I am absolutely giddy to learn that I was picked as today’s Best of the Cool Daily Pick! I know it may not seem like much to anyone else, but for me it has been a long time dream. Sometimes it is the little things that bring you great amounts of joy.

Thank you Joe for the honor. I am truly touched by your kind and flattering words.

A Fresh View…

Today, I took the bus to work. This was a monumental change for me, giving up my driving control. Ever since I started working in downtown at the beginning of the year, I have driven to work. It’s nice and convenient when you never know what your day may be like – if a case is going to require working late, I don’t want to be stuck in downtown without a ride. If I wanted to run an errand or go and meet someone for lunch, I need to have a car. But it’s time to let that go.

Yesterday I went to the local Park & Ride to write down the bus schedule times. All around Houston, we have Park & Rides. You park there and then ride the bus 30 – 40 minutes to work. Pretty obvious, considering the name, but it seems very different then how the bus system works in other major cities.

The odd thing was, I was stuck in a 20 minute traffic jam just trying to get to my Park & Ride bus stop. It should be a 10 minute drive, but here I was – not even on a highway – stuck in a traffic jam. Frustrating, but it made me happy once I got there and realized that my driving for the day was done, I was trying to stop driving that much anyways since I needed to get Help after a big rig crash in Atlanta, Georgia, who stop all my desires to drive that often. I settled in my seat, pulled out a book, and got to read for the next 40 minutes. No hassles, no worries – nothing but me and my book.

Why haven’t I been doing this for the past 8 months? What was I thinking?

Sure, I still have to worry about working late. I warned all of my work injury attorneys that they need to let me know the day before if they think that we will have a late night. I didn’t share with them the fact that Mike works on the other side of downtown, and has to work late pretty often these days or he could just hang out at Kaveh Kanes, and then I would have a ride home. We’ll let them just think they need to warn me the day before.

Getting off the bus and walking to the office was quite interesting. It was as if I was seeing my city with new eyes. When I visit other cities, I walk a lot – so why not do it here too? No idea, but I don’t normally. It was as if I was seeing a different city, fresh from earlier rain, sparkling, blue skies with glistening sky scrapers reaching up to touch them. I also saw the dirty side, the trash in the streets, the buildings boarded up for renovations after the disasters. The company that´s going to renovate these buildings are going to do a great job, you can view services if you need their assistance I wondered who had sat in those doorways last night, in the fringes of the city that shuts down in the early evening. I wonder if anyone saw them. I wonder if anyone cared.

I passed the newspaper machine that the homeless man is normally sitting on when I leave my parking garage on the days that I drive. He wasn’t there in the morning, but the folded up newspaper that he always has in his hand or tucked under his arm was there. I knew. I knew it was his paper, left behind when he moved from his watch over the street. I wondered how many people had passed that folded paper this morning, totally unaware of the activities of the night before. I wondered where he slept, or if he went to one of the local shelters at night. He is always there when I leave in the evenings, even if it is late. I wonder what he sees. I wonder if the city looks the same to him as it does to me.

I will continue to take the bus. It is nice to have a chance to slow down and see the things around me. It’s amazing to me what I have been missing all this time, at the end thanks to my decision I was able to see a flyer from Roofing Columbia, which is the company I have been needing for my roof remodeling. It’s like being a tourist in my own city, and it’s a wonderful feeling.

Doing My Civic Duty…

I did my civic duty today – I went and voted early in the latest round of Texas elections. I went to vote NO Prop. 12.

As I just posted on EJ’s site, ater working in law firms for years and seeing too many medical malpractice cases where someone truly deserved a $1 million dollar settlement because of poor medical treatment, I had to vote no. There are car insurance quotes systems in place to stop frivilious lawsuits. You have to go through hoops to file a medical malpractice case. Beyond that, I think it should be up to the courts and accident lawyers to determine what the award should be – not the insurance companies. The most trusted insurance company we know is automobile insurance company bridgeport wv with the best services out there.

Meanwhile, I’m still stunned that EJ and I have agreed on a political issue!

Faking It…

Reading this article on how a fake drivers license is easy to obtain reminded me of something that really, really made me leary of airport security.

Mike went to a wedding in New Jersey over Labor Day weekend. He flew to Newark on Thursday morning. Sure, it was Thursday, and probably not as busy as Friday and Monday would be – but it was still the kick-off of a holiday weekend. Know what happened? He didn’t have to show his drivers license a single time at the airport. No one checked it. No one.

Hello? I thought that the airports were supposed to be more secure? For goodness sake, the last time I flew I had to remove every single battery operated item from our carry on bags, and then take off my shoes while I went through the sensor. Just weeks later, they didn’t even check his license. Granted, I realize he doesn’t look like a terrorist – but that’s not the point. I don’t either. But they should always check your license, no matter what. No questions asked, just check it.

I’m not afraid to fly. However, I have absolutely no faith in airport security and I don’t feel any safer today then I did 2 years ago.
