Liberation!

How on earth did I end up with so much stuff? When I moved in to my current apartment back in 2000, I didn’t have time to go through everything I wanted to toss out before I moved. Unfortunately, most of it was packed up in boxes then and moved along with me, stuck in the back of Jason’s closet and left to sit for two and a half years.

Until this weekend. This weekend, I cleaned. I cleaned, and cleaned some more. I ignored the computer, neglected my e-mail, didn’t read a single blog after noon on Saturday. (Thank you to Mike for all of his incredible help!) I cleaned. I still had to go through the boxes slowly though, as some had photos randomly stuck in the middle, or old paycheck stubs and bank statements. I have moved out over eight boxes worth of stuff so far, and kept one consolidated box. From some boxes I only kept a small stack of papers. Others, more. But everything was thoroughly purged and sent off to be recycled.

Old school papers from Jason’s days in Kindergarten were probably the hardest thing to throw away. I saved a few, but most of them are gone now. I can’t save everything he ever did – if I did, my house would be overflowing. The special things are worth holding on to for now.

The easist thing to throw out were the old papers I had printed. It seems that at one point in time back in 1998-1999 I was convinced that I had to print the entire Internet. I found articles from WebReview and other sites in the boxes, things that are still online today. Tips to do things like how to create websites in frames (*shiver*) and CSS tutorials that I never read because they made my eyes bleed. Amazing amounts of stuff, all off to the paper recycling bin now because I can find it all online if I need it. Funny how the Internet has changed things like that, isn’t it?

It’s incredible how much stuff we can end up with if we try to hold on to everything. It is very liberating when you let it go.

You Talkin’ to Me?

It seems that Starbucks has an issue with people taking photographs in their stores. I wonder what they would say if they knew I renamed my site last summer based on their Big Pink Cookies? How about the fact that I have a small collection of Big Pink Cookie photos? I took this one on Wednesday at the Starbucks at the Park Shops in downtown. Oops!

Your challenge, if you’re willing to accept it – take photos of the Big Pink Cookies at your local Starbuck(s) and share them with me. They’re back in season now, and I want to see your Big Pink Cookies! Are you up to it?

Give It To Me Up Front…

I have been using the web browser on my phone again lately, and I am reminded again how important it is to present your main content first.

My default design for my blog is now all CSS – table free. I can leave the content where it is, but with a simple change of a tag that tells the sidebar where to display, I can change it from displaying on the right to displaying on the left. Zoom, zoom. Fast.

This matters. Maybe it doesn’t to those of you viewing this through a computer monitor, but if you were blind and had to deal with a device that reads websites to you, would you want to hear all the sidebar links first? No. And if you were waiting for a page to load on a cell phone or other mobile device, you don’t want to wait then either. My blog displays the content first, the sidebar last. If you use tables and have your sidebar on the right, that’s ok too. (Not great, but ok.) However, if you have a sidebar or two on the left, I have to wait for all of that to load before I can read your site – unless you use CSS and have the content of the sidebar at the end of your HTML code.

I understand that you probably don’t think you need to worry about accessibility – but you do. You never know who might be trying to read your site, so serve it up right.

Just What I Needed!

Moving and grooving, lots to do today – Response to Interrogatories, Response to Request for Production, sending two boxes worth of case documents to Austin, preparing other documents for production, looking for people who used to be in the Texas Senate but don’t know. Busy, busy, busy.

Arriving just in time for all of my high stress, Jennifer sent me my very own Titanium Spork. No one had better mess with me now – I’ve got my spork and I’m not afraid to use it! I will go carnival-freak crazy on your ass. I’m serious. I will scratch your eyes out. (It’s from a Will & Grace episode and had to have been one of Parker Posey’s best lines on the show.) Spork Posse, word.

Not Alone…

It is an absolutely gorgeous day outside – probably one of the last “cool” days we’ll have before summer hits in full force. Cool is a relative term around here – it’s probably in the mid-80’s, but we’ve already seen temps as high as 94 and it’s still May. I’m learning to not hate Houston as much as I once did, but I still hate the summer heat which keeps you indoors in air conditioned comfort.

Today I want to run and play in the park. I want to wander aimlessly and take photographs. Instead, I’m enjoying my view from 34 floors up, looking out at a clear, crisp blue sky. Wandering at lunchtime is an option, and I might have to take a stroll after work and see what I can find. Maybe that will help to satisfy some of this creative energy that is trapped inside of me.

Seems I am not the only person craving changes – here are some Fresh Friday Finds for you to enjoy while I’m at work!
