One of those tweaks that I have always wanted for my blog is a Spell Checker. I hate to make errors, but sometimes I just don’t want to take the time to go and look things up. Now there is a Spell Checker plugin for WordPress! Yeah! [via Matt]
Yesterday I went to look up a word online, only to discover that my favorite dictionary site, Merriam-Webster Online is no longer free. What?!? *sniff* How can they figure out things like the fact that blog was the most looked-up word of 2004 if the service is no longer free? I’m sad that they have changed their policy. I can understand why – who needs to go and buy a dictionary if it is all online for free? But it is still so much more convenient when it is online.

I use OneLook for dictionary lookups–it hits a bunch of online dictionaries.
Hmm.. My bookmarked M-W quicksearches still seem to work.
There is a great extension for fire fox called Spellbound. You can find it at http://spellbound.sourceforge.net. It is great because you can spell check anything you type on the internet. I even spell checked this comment.
Love the new spellchecker! Thanks for pointing that out, Christine!
I’ve always used dictionary.com. It’s still free which is good because, after all, bad grammar will get you nowhere, Christine. 😉
M-W.com is still free, Christine — it’s just that certain newer or unusual words (including “blog”) are only accessible with a paid account. Look up “snarky” or “cheap” or “exclusive,” though, and you’ll find that lookups are free just like before.
Actually, when I first got the “sign up” message, I was looking up a common word – I just used blog as an example in my post. I’ll go back and try it again though – maybe it just felt like being mean to me. 😉
Well I’ll be… I just looked up “fish” at M-W and it worked! Huh. Interesting. Ok, I’ll remember that in the future! Thanks for letting me know!
