In addition to my recent disco injury, which effected my left leg last week, this week I’ve been having problems with my right leg. Earlier this week, I fell asleep sitting upright in my favorite Ikea chair – with the laptop on my lap – a skill I have mastered by taking the bus over the years. I slept there all night, and the next day I discovered that my right ankle and foot hurt. Again, I dismissed it to having “slept strange” and thought it would go away within a day or two.
It didn’t. And after Kymberlie’s battle with a pulminary embolisum a few months ago, I got worried. I am in a high enough risk factor category for a blood clot that I realized after two days of pain I needed to have it looked at by a doctor. Especially since the pain was running down my entire right leg and really bad in the ankle and foot area – I am in agony whenever I walk.
So this morning I spent an hour on the phone trying to find a doctor that could work me in to their schedule. I had called my Dad and asked if he thought I should go to his cardiovascular doctor, and he said he didn’t think so – turns out, that was exactly who I needed to go see. I was at their office by 9:30 and worked in to the schedule. Instead of a blood clot, it turns out that I have Sciatica, an inflammation of the sciatic nerve. However, just to be sure that is really the cause, I get to spend Saturday morning having a MRI of my lumbar spine and an arterial and veneous doppler done. Yes, just how I wanted to spend my Thanksgiving vacation… Hopefully, the anti-inflammatory meds they gave me should help with the pain. I am going to ask about exercises and so forth when I go in for my follow-up visit after the test results come in.
So first it was the disco injury, now it’s the Ikea injury. What next?!? Trust me, I’m not taking up breakdancing any time soon!

Ooh, I’ve had that. Not much fun at all. Nerve pain is awful, it’s not like muscle pain, where you can rub it to make it feel better. Hang in there, it takes time to get rid of.
Glad you found out what the problem is and I hope you are back on your feet soon (ha, ha, pun intended). Oh, and of course, have a great Thanksgiving!
Sorry about that. I get reoccuring sciatica from an undiagnosed back injury from the first time I gave birth. Hope you feel better soon.
I’ve had that on and off for years. Takes forever to go away and painkillers don’t work. I think yoga or streching exercises are your best bet.
You silly nut, disco injuries, heh. Seriously, I hope it heal fast and the medication does the trick.
i hope this doesn’t affect your cycling dream. i’m glad you also don’t work with me… at one point in time, everyone was hobbling around in crutches, getting knee surgery, back surgery, etc. *knock on wood* i’m not affected!
Oh man! I’m sorry! I’m glad you are getting it taken care of though. I have a bad habit of trying to tough it out before I go, then it is too late. I’m sorry you have to spend your Sat doing that. 🙁 Let us know how it goes!
hope you feel better soon!
sounds like you need to get rid of the ikea chair – lest this be a repetitive injury… (I’ll be right over)… 🙂
Ouch. I know sciatica pain well…had it with both of my pregnancies. Hope you heal quickly. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. 🙂
Ewww, I had this with my pregnancies, too. Here’s hoping Saturday’s test proves *nothing* (else) is amiss *and* your cycling plans are just fine. I’ll be thinking of you! And Happy Thanksgiving to you, Jason and yours. *mwah*
happy anniversary, Christine!!! i hope things are going well with Mike’s parents being in town! *hug*
Oh no, Christine! I’ve had sciatic (sp?) nerve pain before and it hurts! I hope this resolves itself quickly. (And that it ends up being nothing more than Sciatica.) Keep us updated!
I hope it didnt ruin your turkey day!
abs x
i meant Happy Thanksgiving! (d’oh!)
Dang baby…hope you’re feeling better. Rest easy.
Oh, Ouch! Sciatica is No Fun. I had it on and off for 14 years and the only thing that helped were major anti-inflammatory drugs in the form of Ibufen. Thankfully, after a day or two it would go away and I could live until the next attack. Do take care and let us know how you’re doing.
Hope you feel better soon.
After muttering around for two years I find myself with insurance again and sure enough I need to make a trip to the doctor myself. Karmic balance has been achieved, I move neither forward or back.
*chuckle*
I leave the net for awhile and you go and get into trouble. >:-| Damn! Hope you’re feeling better!! (I think I’ve been having sympathy pains – recently I keep getting sciatic-like pains… almost like I did when I was pregnant… except I’m not. Nice.) LOL! I’ll just move a certain way and than WHAMO! Shooing pain down my back and butt. So much fun! 🙁
