I look at my traffic and it seems to be rising. I look at my comments – and they are empty. I look at other sites and within seconds of a post going live, there are comments. I think about the fact that I read the blogs of the latest commenters before I read anything else. And without comments … I don’t know what to do.
I loooooove it when people leave comments. I have never bashed people that leave comments, never picked fights because I disagree with what they said. Matter of fact, I’m rather proud of how “flame-war free” this site has been for over a year if not longer. I’ve never had to ban comment trolls because I very rarely have them and they don’t normally return after the first time.
So here is your chance – the comments are as wide open as always – tell me, why you don’t normally leave any comments behind?

Maybe it has something to do with everyone using RSS aggregators now? If I see there have been other comments I’m more likely to click and see what they are and respond.
I like to snoop, silently. However, just for you, this time I will say *hi* 🙂
But Matt, I leave MORE comments now that I’m using an aggregator and I can see the posts quickly & easily. That reminds me though – I’m supposed to be working on that comment feed…
HI SARA!!! 😀 (See, that was easy… no pain or anything!)
I’m usually in too much of a hurry. I zoom through my blog reads with barely anytime to comment. And sometimes.. I just don’t have anything to say 🙂
I am such a lazy bitch. No, really. It’s not you, it’s me. I used to leave like easily 3x as many comments a day as posts to my own website. And now I leave probably 2-3 comments a day.
I too leave more comments now that I use NewzCrawler – plus I’m less worried about being torn to shreds for saying something.
it could also be that I spend an ungodly amount of time on a certain webforum lately and I’m more prone to saying things.
but believe me – I feel your pain for lack of comments 🙁
I just asked google for “blah blah blah” and pressed “I’m feeling lucky” and found this site
Anything good here?
Hey Christine~
I hope all is well? It is cold here again in Wisconsin. Hope to chat soon.
I just don’t post a lot of comments. I would rather lurn than be a “me2” whore.
Y’know…I’m a lurker. *lurk lurk*
I guess I just figured you have lots of people commenting and what’s 2 cents by lil’ ol’ me? 🙂 But I do read…that counts, right?
Generally it’s because I don’t have anything to say. I take in what you and the other bloggers write and move on. Sometimes I say something, but unless it’s something that really relates to me, I don’t. I just talk to myself in my head.
normally I barely have enough time to read the blogs on my list, so I usually don’t comment unless something strikes me or have time to say something…
Well, I comment when I have something to say… You don’t want comments with me just going:
“:)”
Do you? 😉
Maybe when I read, but don’t have anything of interest to say, I’ll say:
“SPORK!!”
Then people can mock me, call me “Rainman” and other derogatory names. Enjoyment will be had by all. 😉
I usually only comment if I can really relate to a post or have something to add to it. Otherwise… what is there to say? LOL!
Then again, for each post, maybe I’ll just say:
“Where’s your comment feed?”
“Where’s your comment feed?”
Over and over and over again.
[Insert Dr. Evil Laugh Here] 😉
I usually only leave comments when I know the person, because it almost feels like a waste to leave a comment and not have them respond, ya know?
Cis had it right. People are lazy.
I look at the traffic at the red kitchen and wonder why re-view has no pings happening.
*shrug*
I, uh, um, er, gotta go! Surgeon Specific to the rescue!
Because I’m lazy, that’s why! I get this site through the blo.gs aim notifications, and usually don’t click the link to the article to post. That, and I usually have nothing to say.
Usually, it’s because I just don’t have anything to say. Lately, it’s because I’m too busy refreshing pages at BlogShares to comment. LOL
I don’t usually leave a comment because I don’t have much to say. I read and go on. However, for some strange reason TODAY I felt the need to comment. Strange eh?
Have a good one Christine and don’t worry.. no one comments at my site either 😉
Most of the time I tend to lurk and only speak up when I have something of value to say. Also, sometimes it is hard to tell if someone really wants comments from people outside of their circle of friends. Unless of course they actually say so like you have just done. I think that made sense.
I gotta say the reason I don’t, is cause…well…I don’t have anything good to say.
I am not very creative when replying to people’s posts. It’s kinda like in the online courses where you have to respond to students posts…I usually leave, “Ummm, great, very well written” or the like.
“sometimes it is hard to tell if someone really wants comments from people outside of their circle of friends.” …. I have to agree with that statement, as well as the “relating” to whatever is being said in the entry. 🙂
Hi Christine 🙂
reasons why I usually don’t comment: 😉
1. I am a lurker
2. don’t have anything to say
3. I feel it doesn’t apply to me
4. I don’t frequent your site that often (lack of time) and then I feel silly leaving comments on post you posted two days ago 🙂
hope that helps 🙂
I don’t leave comments much anywhere, because I don’t feel as though my words are worth reading. So I lurk 🙂 LOL
I’m a lurker too. I come here most every day, yet I don’t know if I have ever left a commment.
Reasons why? I don’t have anything to say about the post. I don’t know enough about the subject to put my two-cents in. Someone has already expressed my thoughts and I don’t want to sound redundant. I don’t want to come across as a dork. Pretty much like normal life.
I normally start to comment, read what I type, and say “oh gee, could I sound more stupid?” and hit cancel.
Plus, you don’t know me, so I figured that sometimes it’s weird if I did comment.
but the only reason I only use C as my name is because my name is christine as well, and I figured that would only get confusing:)
I’m horrible at leaving comments and yet, I feel like no one leaves me comments either! Go figure. lol 🙂
I too agree with the “circle of friends” comment. When you lurk you still get all the tid-bits but remain in that outside circle. The few times I felt the need a need to comment, that’s usually what stops me – the she don’t know me from shinola feeling:-) Were as if I commented often they would basically be – ooh, or me to – type of things.
Lurker girl is out of the closet 🙂 Well I must admit the last time you did a post like this awhile ago I did not comment, somehow this time I felt compelled.
I think it’s a lot of reasons. There are SO MANY more blogs out there from even just a year ago, it gets hard to comment on all of them. TrackBack also makes it easier just to write about things on your own blog and take up space/bandwidth rather than commenting AND writing the same thing at your own site. And sometimes the cat just has my tongue. 😉
*cough* *cough* because I’m sick today. I know I know – it doesn’t excuse my other surfings on other days… but will it let me squeak by today?
I don’t always leave a comment when I read your site. I tend to comment on sites that comment on my blog as well. I don’t really know why. But I take it as kind of a slap in the face if I religiously read a blog and comment and never hear from that person on mine. So, I sometimes just read and lurk. I’m a rather good lurker. 😉
Hi!
My excuse reason, is the lame-o: “i’m new at this blog thing” one.
Forgive me?
I also think that newzcrawler (thanks for the suggestion, btw, love it) and the like, make it easier to read more blogs, which may fill the comment time we busy people had (if I can join the ranks of the ‘we’ now).
Love reading you,
~StarzAbove~
So many blogs, so little time. But you’re on my list of favorites and I’ll do my part to keep the blog commenting a busy thing.
I’m not really sure why I don’t comment more. I do comment, but not all the time. I’ve noticed the same thing on my blog too, I’l get a bit of traffic (not “alot” by most standards) but then few will comment. I enjoy your blog tho! =:D
See, the whole “I’m not a part of your circle, so I can’t comment” is the biggest thing I hope to break. Every person that I consider a close blogging friend, I met through comments. Comments here lead to comments on their sites. And back and forth, until we got to where we are today.
I’ve posted before about the “Inner Circle Syndrome” and the fact that I don’t feel like I am a part of any one circle. I have friends in many, many circles, and I personally like it that way. The virtual door is always open, even if all you want to say is “I agree” or “Good post” or even “you suck”. (I was told that earlier this week – thanks Boobka! *wink*)
I’m usually not a big commenter on any of the blogs I visit unless I read something that I can relate to or can say something about without fear of sounding silly. 🙂
I’m constantly trying to break myself of this habit – one of these days I will! 😀
I don’t really know why I don’t comment, it isn’t because I feel “outside the circle”, more just because I don’t always have a lot to say. But I’m here lurking away! 🙂
hey. I love your site, but I read it in an RSS aggregator and normally I don’t comment on stuff unless it is super important, like this instance. Also, I’m shy.
You intimidate me.
Just kidding.
I always read and I will be better about commenting.
As I recently blogged, comments are like reacharounds, you should just be courteous and give one.
I will heed my own advice.
hello, here’s one more for you.
cheers 🙂
maya
i’m usually a quiet reader and don’t leave comments. basically because i don’t have comments! i like your site and read it regularly. so, it’s my first time to say ‘hi’!
I usually don’t leave comments because I’m too busy being suckd into the links chain. I go to one link and then I follow a link from there and onwards I usually forget where I’ve come from.
Because I’m too busy trying to get the next GuessThatMovie image ready for a certain somebody to guess? 😉
Sometimes it’s just a case that I’m short of time, sometimes I can’t think of something to say and sometimes you manage to say it all yourself….
I am in the camp of “Don’t say anything unless you have something to say.” If something really strikes a chord with me, or I have a question, or something I want to add, then I’ll comment! Otherwise, not. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, though I understand pining for more comments (since I’m always doing that same thing).
Cause I’m usually a lazy ass and have nothing intelligent to say.
I know that I should leave more comments, but I’m always lurking in the background. I’m a reader, not so much of a commenter…I’ll try to fix that! 😉
I am always using a newsreader. I would encourage you to figure out how to put a link for comments within the feed. I have seen that for other sites, and I do comment more often there.
You know, I rarely leave comments (anywhere for that matter). It’s always a bit freaky to have my IP logged and I know people do an nslookup on it. Well, I do.
Besides, there’s too much internal conversation going on; sometimes I think I’ve left a comment when really, I never got out of bed and it’s been hours since I visited.
Speaking of which, cheer for the compliment. It made me smile, ear to ear.
PS: I need to learn from you.
