Requiring Laptop Computers in College

I just received my “Goodies to Go” Newsletter from HTMLGoodies.com. It says, “Universities are beginning to require that incoming freshmen have laptop computers when they arrive on campus. Framingham State College in MA, says all incoming students must have a wireless equipped machine starting next year. If the student cannot afford a laptop, one will be sold to the student as part of a low-interest education loan. Framingham joins around 40 other colleges and universities who are trying out the new computer-based class of 2005.” Personally, I think that’s a bit excessive. College is enough of a financial burden for most people. Now you have to buy a laptop and it has to be wireless? Wireless service is not exactly cheap, and not that dependable from what I have heard from people that have used it. I can understand suggesting that they have their own PC, and then offering computers in various locations on campus for the students that don’t. But requiring a wireless laptop? Hmmmm… Tell me what you think. Yep, that’s what that “Talk Back” link is there for. Thanks!

Honestly? I don’t know what to think. I just graduated from high school- literally a week afo, and am now faced with the dilemma of getting a computer. I don’t know whether to get a desktop or latptop. Desktops are cheaper, yet they aren’t as flexible. Laptops are awesome in their mobility, yet theft is a huge concern. I wanted a laptop because it just seems more convenient, but chances are that I’m going to be going with a desktop, because I just can’t risk someone ripping my laptop off. If getting a laptop is going to be mandatory… what happens if someone steals it? The student shouldn’t be responsible, because, heck, they may not have wanted to have a laptop in the first place. Now they have to go out and buy another new one. They are so freaking expensive, and wireless ones start around $1,300- and that’s just a lower end one. I don’t think it should be mandatory, but I do think suggestions are greatly appreciated- personally I’d like to know what my school recommends- but they don’t because they don’t want to be responsible of something happens to it. I guess it all depends on the school, but I think it’s dumb to have it be mandatory. Yea, very dumb.
