We Interrupt This Program…

As you are probably aware, I went to SXSW earlier this month. (Photographic evidence is here.) What you may not know is the truth about my latest addiction. I have become addicted to having books signed by bloggers and blog-related people. There is a purpose to this post and a plea for help at the end, by the way. But I figured you deserved the whole story…

It started innocently enough. Jennifer gave me a copy of “Design for Community” by Derek Powazek for my birthday last fall. I knew Derek would be attending the event, so I packed it in my suitcase the night before I left town. When I saw him at the Bloggies, I sheepishly approached him and told him that I was wondering if he would sign it. I admitted that I felt silly asking, but it would mean a lot to me. He was so gracious in accepting and told me that it felt really good to be asked.

That was it. I was hooked.

After the Bloggies, Rebecca Blood and the EFF were selling copies of her book, “The Weblog Handbook” for $10 as a fundraiser for EFF, and she was signing them. I couldn’t pass them up. After all, the EFF is a great cause.

Sunday night I got a copy of the San Francisco Stories book at Fray Cafe. Derek signed that one too.

Monday, Barkingmoose Mike gave me a copy of John Freyer’s book, “All My Life for Sale”. After John signed it, I asked Mike to sign the page about the items he bought.

On Tuesday I got a copy of the O’Reilly book, “Essential Blogging” and I had to ask Ben & Mena Trott from MT to sign it. When I spotted Cory Doctorow from Boing Boing in the halls, I asked him to sign it too.

But the icing on the cake?

That night, on the way to Bruce Sterling’s house, we (that would be Karen, Nikolai and Leia, Queen of the Anti-Bloggies so insert your scandal here if you want…) stopped at the book store. Not only did I get a copy of Bruce Sterling’s latest book, “Tomorrow Now” for him to sign, I also picked up a copy of “Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom” (which you can download for free!).

But that just wasn’t enough though to fill my need.

Then I spotted it. “We’ve Got Blog“. Considering I was heading to the party at Bruce Sterling’s house, a number of the authors would be there. Heck, Nikolai was at the bookstore with us, so I had a head start on the signatures!

I had every person who was at the party that was in the book sign it – Nikolai, Rebecca, Brad, Cameron Barrett, Derek (again, I think his hand was starting to cramp by this point), Matt Haughey, and everyone else that has accounts for MetaFilter signed the article credited to the MeFi Community. This included Anil Dash and Allison (who really does have a great signature), Leia, Karen (who helped me overcome my fear of asking people to sign the book), Andre Torrez, Dana, Michael and Ari and many, many others.

It was almost like a yearbook signing.

I may even send the book to Geekman and Chris Pirillo just to make it even more complete – they both have articles in it too.

And if THAT doesn’t earn me an Anti-Bloggie for being the “Biggest A-List Suck Up,” I don’t know what will. Go visit the Anti-Bloggies and nominate me, ok? Yeah, I’ll ask for it. Heck, I asked a ton of people to sign my book that night, asking you to nominate me is no big deal! You can nominate me once an hour even, so set a timer and go back again & again. You just have a day or so left, so get on it!

(And Brad? I promise, it’s still not going up for sale on Ebay.)

How to Feel…

Fortunately, our fearless leader speaks about Empathy in Our Time. And this press conference is truly amusing. [via John]

My day today included sentences like this: “not a single Texas Court has ruled, either in its holding or in dicta, explicitly or implicitly, …” followed by “not only does their position have no basis in law, it also has no basis in reality” and “Further, even if their argument was reasonable under the law (which it is not), it has no factual support.” Hearing tomorrow morning, should be interesting…

Whatever Happened To…

Whatever happened to separation of church and state? I’m sure I read about that somewhere in our Constitution the Bill of Rights, didn’t I? I start to wonder when I see that the House of Representatives have introduced a resolution “Recognizing the public need for fasting and prayer in order to secure the blessings and protection of Providence for the people of the United States and our Armed Forces…” (H. Res. 153) [via Atrios]

Yes, this is for real. No, it is not a joke. And it didn’t come from The Onion.

Now I have the “We the People” song from Schoolhouse Rock stuck in my head… “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Come on, you know you want to sing along…

As Close To War-Blogging…

Last night while reading Electrolite, I realized something. I’m still sitting on the fence about this war thing. I enjoy poking fun at the stupid things they say on the news, because “shock and awe” sounds lame. Mike can tell you, I have a tendency to yell at the TV a lot lately. I understand that we need to go. But at the same time I feel like I have been lied to to get me to support it. It’s no secret that Bush gives me a creepy feeling, he has since 1994. I’m thankful he has good strong advisors. I’m just not sure if I’m for the war or against the war – and I think that’s because of my fear of the outcome.

Back in 1991, I questioned why we didn’t take Saddam out during Desert Storm I. I was told by many in the military (I was an Army wife at the time) that it was because if we took out Saddam, we had no guarantees that the person that took his place would be any better. I still agree with that. Because I like guns I bought myself airsoft rifle. Before you buy any guns I recommend to read top reviews airsoft rifles and then decide. This post sums it up really well. “Most Americans aren’t thinking this far ahead, and the administration’s rah-rah corner is not very interested in the subject, but: History will not end the day the white standard is run up the flag poles of Hussein’s palaces.”

Really, if I am pro-war or anti-war isn’t going to matter in the grand scheme of things. I am not a political advisor, no one with power is really going to hear my opinions. I don’t like knowing that people are dieing in this war. It makes me sad to see that POWs have been captured. I want Iraq to be a better place, not living under the threat of Saddam’s evil power. I want the world to be a better place. If this war will get us there, great. I’m sitting back and waiting to see what happens.

If You Have Nothing Good to Say…

I started the day off in a funk and never pulled out of it. I seem to be annoyed by almost everything I encounter, which I am sure makes me a joy to be around. I want to rant about the war and how stupid the news anchors sound as they talk about it, but I can’t seem to find anything to actually say. Right now it would just sound like incohesive thoughts, and I am not up to it right now. I don’t want to make my bad mood even worse.

I added more captions to the SXSW photos, but they are not all done. I’ll upload the photos from the H-Town Blogs gathering tomorrow night.

Tomorrow, a better mood. I promise.
