The Web As We Know It…

Not only is today Albert Einstein’s birthday, but NCSA Mosaic for X 0.10 was released 10 years ago today. I still remember the first time I got online in 1995 – it was definitely a life changing experience in many ways. The browser wars were already in full swing by then – I’ve always been an Internet Explorer kind of gal, but I used Netscape first. How about you? When did you first get online? What browser did you use then? What browser do you prefer now? How has the Internet changed your life? (This last topic will come up again as I write more about SXSW.)

This post brought to you courtesy of a RSS Feed and Slashdot.

Like That, It’s Gone…

Well, FeedReader lasted all of 8 hours. Then it crashed, ate all of the RSS feeds I had already entered in to it, and so I deleted it. I’m mean like that.

Thanks to a suggestion from TJ, I went and downloaded Syndirella (which I later spotted being recommended at Jish’s site too) and the required .NET stuff. It’s up and running now and I have a Reader that isn’t “broken” anymore. Well, FeedReader wasn’t broken, but as Jay pointed out, it wasn’t reading the CDATA information in my new XML template. Instead it was reading just the description information, MTEntryExcerpt, as Mark had the template (taken from here) set up originally.

I haven’t changed my RSS feed back to be like Mark’s again, but if you happen to be using a reader that I’m now freaking out with my long description, please let me know. If you haven’t updated your RSS template yet – and I’m wondering why not, since I’ve now posted about it 3 times today – here are Jay’s compelling reasons why you should. Basically, I want you to feed me full posts, not just choppy little excerpts. Sure they are a great teaser, but when I’m pressed for time I need the whole thing.

Now I just have to tweak my comment form to allow you to leave your RSS feed link. I’m always willing to do whatever I can to make Chris happy.

Most Embarrassing Moment at SXSW…

I met many, many fascinating and wonderful people at SXSW this year, and I had a chance to be reunited with a lot of people that I had met before. I will post about that later on though. This post instead will focus on what is one of my more embarrassing moments, ever. Before I begin, I should state that I don’t get embarrassed very often at all. But this was one of those rare times…

Monday night, late in the evening, we all headed over to the Omni Hotel. The bar was already closed, but it is a nice quiet place to just hang out so it worked. I walked in and spotted Matt sitting on a couch next to Tantek, who I had not met yet. Seems I should have maybe done some research before our encounter:

Matt: Christine, have you met Tantek?
{Handshaking, “nice to meet you” and so forth}
Me: No, I sat down to talk to you guys at El Sol y La Luna on Saturday night, but you guys were talking about geek stuff that was going to make my head explode. C++, code, CSS and all that. CSS makes my eyes bleed.
Matt: (Cracking up and turning red.)
Tantek: What did you say?
Me: CSS makes my eyes bleed.
Tantek: (Laughing so hard he leaned over and put his face on the couch to stifle the laughter.)

Hmmm… it seems that Tantek had this incredibly huge role in getting CSS to where it is today and if I had attended the CSS panel earlier in the conference I might have known that. No, instead I just admitted to him that it makes my eyes bleed. Whoops.

It was truly a priceless moment. Maybe one that only the geekiest among us can appreciate. Thankfully, he then asked my why I felt that way – I explained that I can grasp the basics but anything beyond that has given me migraines in the past – and then I went on to point out that Kristine has rescued me several times when I have had CSS needs. We visited her site. All was good. The laughter continued as Jessica and I watched the rocking kittens.

On Tuesday night at the party at Bruce Sterling’s house, Nikolai offered to create a CSS version of my default design so I could study it. Tantek offered a suggestion of the book I should read so that I can overcome my fear of CSS. And the rest of us just laughed about the fact that I actually said, “CSS makes my eyes bleed.” Because what’s the point of being embarrassed if you can’t laugh about it?

True happiness consists not in the multitude of friends, but in the worth and choice. – Ben Johnson

Side Note…

When I was tweaking my XML using the Dive in to Mark template information, I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t getting full posts like Chris does on his feed. Then I looked at the code. Duh… be sure to change the description line from MTEntryExcerpt to MTEntryBody if you want to serve up full feeds. My head still hurts from where I smacked it earlier.

One question though – how does that affect people using things like NetNewsWire, where it reads the CDATA information instead of the description? Or is in addition to the description?

While I’m on the topic of fixing things, can anyone find the code that prevents Dawn from leaving comments on my site while using the Safari browser? Since I don’t have Safari, being a Windows user, I can’t really debug it myself.

Testing…

This is a test. This is only a test. If this was a real post and you were using a RSS reader, you should see full posts, thanks to Dive In to Mark’s template. We will now return to our regularly scheduled broadcast. This was only a test.

I am using FeedReader after checking it out on Mike’s laptop last night. So far so good. Have XML? Where is it at so I can add you to my reader? Take me to your leader? Leave a comment and let me know…
