I just posted this in my comments on the post below, but decided to make it a post too for anyone that might wonder or might have more information to share.
I had allergy testing done because every year I have sinus problems (to the point I’ve asked a doctor before if they could just cut them out) – and any time I end up congested from allergies, I then end up with a sinus infection – or this last time I ended up with tonsillitis. We know it is allergies because Claritin helps keep the congestion away. I’ve had swollen glands most of the fall & winter this year and my doctor suspected it is also due to allergies. Now that we have tested me and found out what my allergies are, they will mix up a special serum just for me and I will go in once a week for injections. (I think it is once a week – maybe once every two weeks?) This will help me build up immunities to my allergies – hopefully preventing the sinus infections and tonsillitis of my past.
My family doctor just gave me Claritin constantly to fight my allergies, without ever testing to see what they were. I went to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist for my tonsillitis though, and he is the one that recommended it (I’ve always wondered why no one did it in the past). Now that we know what we’re fighting, we can fight it better.
On a positive note, I called my doctor’s office this afternoon and she had me come in so they could check my itchy arms. They hooked me up with some special prescription ointment that made the itch go away. For now. Cannabis products from https://d8superstore.com/category/cbg may also help reduce the effects of allergies like swelling or inflammation. If stress is what triggers your allergies or any other health conditions, Dab Pens offers products that may help relieve your stress.

Very interesting about the mercury thing. I have very old silver fillings that are probably mercury. hmmmm!
Susan
I, like Mark, have never had any of the hundreds of gels or creams that I tried help the condition and half of then were prescription.
I have no idea if my fillings are amalgam or not.
I remain to say the most positive effects were ice or cold water from a hand held shower.
Many nights at 2 AM or later I would resort to getting into a cold shower and just standing there feeling sorry for myself. Sometimes it would take 2 during the night to give me some blessed relief.
My BRP has been in moderate remission for about the last 7 or 8 months.
I am grateful!!!

I meant, of course, multiple sclerosis. Judith
Stephanie and Mark, I hope you read this since you two will be putting the survey together. Could you please put a question in there about mercury/silver fillings. (i.e. Do you have silver/mercury fillings?) Please see Judith’s October 9th post. I think it’s a good question to ask, it won’t hurt anyway 🙂

Hi Stephanie, my e-mail address is mrbill1125@aol.com, if we all lget some answers together maybe we could, help in some way, i pray!!!!This is not an easy thing were dealing with!!!! ……….sleep softly JoAnn
Hi Mary, that was really sweet of you, I have suffered with this for years, BUT last two times have been really torture, no relief. I got some sleeping pills, but so far they have not helped much. Maybe I will take 1plus 1/2 and see if that helps . This whole thing makes me feel hopeless, life is difficult enough! But i have gone years without any symptoms,I keep praying it will go away. for all of us!!!! God bless you all…sleep softly JoAnn

Hooray! I live on the West Coast, and have suffered with this tormenting itch for years and years, mainly on my upper arms, and two of my midwestern sisters have it as well. I have tried a jillion differnt things, among them cortisone cream, Gold Bond cream, Skin Zinc, Arnica gel, ice, cold wet washcloths, all of which helped some, and even ammonia, which burns but feels better than the itch. I tried Linda’s baking soda paste, which felt pretty good once it dried and came off but is kinda inconvenient. To my surprise and delight, Phoenix Karie’s suggestion of menthol ice gel Rub A535 or generic equivalent actually works! It is bizarre that something designed to soothe achy muscles and arthritis would help, so I was skeptical. But I can sleep now usually without two Tylenol 3s and it rarely itches during the day anyway, and if it does I just apply the gel. Sometimes if I’m in a hurry I even dry it with a hair dryer, which works just fine. I just wash it off in the morning and put the cortisone cream on to help the healing. THANK YOUÂ KARIE! I’m eternally grateful.
like the menthol ice gel, try VICKS VAPORUB…readily available, cheap, and it has worked for me during september, with the itching diminished alsmost to the point of being gone, for this year, at least!!!
I too have had the “itch” for a very long time, 15 years or so, but who’s counting? I have tried many things without success:
Hi everyone, JoAnn here. Yesterday and last night I itched soooo bad, finally went to bed, with the ice packs on both arms, awoke this morning and now it is 8 in the evening, and I have NOT itched. I just took a bath and I just soaked for awhile, put some lotion on my legs, but I am afraid to put anything on my arms, it seemed every lotion I tried, after a day or so, quite working!!!!! And they seemed to itch worse, if that’s possible?????Yesterday I went to my vitamin store, I was thinking how I had gone literally years WITHOUT the itch. One pill I had taken for about 25 years, I just stop taking it.And then I was reading about vitB-12,and how it helps nerve endins in your body, so I bought some B-12 and odorless Garlic, which are also good for detoxification in your body.. The B-12 are 5000mg, the garlic tabs are Kyolic brand, that is the brand I have used for years. I donot know why I stopped itching for sure, but I am going to take the vitamins, and be more aware of what I eat and drink. I thought I shoud share, you all tried to be helpful, and I do appreciate , thank you!!!! I’ve never mention this I am 65 yrs blond. God bless you all…..sleep softly JoAnn
Hmm, Nice to hear of the little things that help. JoAnn, the B12 and the garlic sound interesting. How much of each (micrograms?) do you eat per day? I really hope it does the trick for you!
🙂 Mari Anne
Hi,
Thanks for all your postings. My husband has suffered this upper arm itch for years. He says it feels like something is crawling under his skin. We too have tried all different kinds of creams. Have not tried ice or baking soda so that will be next!! I had no idea how big this problem was until I came upon this site. Thanks
Hi Mari Anne, JoAnn here,Ithe garlic is Kyolic formula 105, I take from 4 to 6 a day. There is 400mg of aged garlic extract, plus some other supplements. The B-12 are 5000 mcg, i take about 4 a day, you just put them under your tongue. I stopped taking the garlic 4 to 6 yrs ago, i have taken vitamins regularly for about 35 yrs, so i will continue to take them, it will take awhile for them to get into your system, and really help. The itch did return after 1 day of being itch free. I am hoping it stops for good, I would like that!!!! This is really an awful thing to go thru!! I wish more people would coment, but I remenber when my itching stopped last time, and we all live in such a busy world… just finding time is not always easy!! I will close for now, God bless you all. sleep sofltly..JoAnn
My itching is only on my upper left arm. This makes years 2. Seems to only come on this time of year. Crushed ice in a plastic bag layed over the arm and held in place by a long sleve tight shirt helps bring relief. I read several post and saw mention of someone doing a survey. GREAT IDEA!!!!! I’ll certainly participate and if there’s room for questions on it I wonder if you would consider asking this one if it’s not already on there. How many of us have had that vacination on our upper arm. I don’t know excately what the vacination was for, I’ve heard polio, small pox but we know who we are, they stopped giving them somewhere around 1968, so those of us born before that should have on. I am 40 born in 1966, hair color is dark blonde with some red influence and my eyes are green, skin is light, freckles. no known allergies, if my iron is low I don’t know it but I was anemic 21 years ago, so possibly could be now and just don’t know it.
Hi
i live in the uk and am 45 brown hair brown eyes.
My upper arms and shoulders started itching mid august, just like pin pricks or prickly heat. There is no rash and as yet I have managed not to shred my skin!
it starts as soon as I get into bed and i have checked my diet any products I have used and ther eis no reason for it.
I will go to docs and see what they say but I know i will end up with creams.
I wonder if its hormonal? Its not the sun as we don’t have a great deal but I am going to Lanzarote this week so I will be keen to see if it gets worse or better.
Hi all, Cate here from Australia….. I live in one of the hottest parts of the planet that being the north of Aussie…. and the tempreture is up to 108 degrees already…. (it’s spring coming into summer here)…I have placed a few post here one giving an introduction to my pleasure and relief at finding this sight…. another sharing my absolute relief as I had been to the chiropractor and all symptoms disapeared for 4 months and then the symptons returned…. Well, I thought I would give the chiropractor another go as it worked so well the last time…. I was disapointed as I went along looking for help again but it didn’t happen…. in fact it got worse and the weather got hotter…. I was lucky though because at my third appointment my one of my arms began to itch and I was able to show my chiro…. she felt my arm and could feel the heat generating from the friction caused when the nerve ending ‘vibrate’ causing the itch and burning sensation.. the chiro was surprised and baffled… the next time I went I took a copy of all the posts here and she spent a week reading through them…. she then manipulated my back… etc….. WELL since that day… last Wednesday…. to today Monday….. the itch has completely stopped…. I am sure it was due to the chiro working on me…. as both times I have got relief it has been after some sessions with the Chiro…
It didn’t happen straight away…. but it would appear again I am itch free for a while…. probably till I put my neck out again…. or as I’m getting older (48) until the oestoporosis sets in or arthrisis etc…. I guess what I’m saying is… I think I’ll have this most of my life….. I think it will happen more frequently as I get older… I think I will get some relief at different times of the year…. but I think it is worth every $45… fee she charges me once a week to get that relief….
To test my theory I have been out in the sun…. no itch…. turned of the air conditioning… no itch…. it niggles a little…. but I think that’s probably due to small amounts of injury to my nerves…. but it’s not an itch…just the skins likes a rub every now and then….
I hope this helps someone….. If you’ve had enough…. try weekly or twice weekly with a chiro…. get someone who’ll listen and see how it goes….. Cheers to all………
Cate…. 🙂
Hi Cate, I live on the Gold Coast and I so agree with you.
Acupuncture for me, chiro for you (chiro for me upset my spine too much), reduce junk food, drink water. And it works! I am a bit shocked at the drugs some people are prepared to take – if you check the contra-indications on the web they are quite scary. Sometimes I think it is easier to act like a victim rather than take control of your own body.
wow — i’ve been on here for quite a few months now and i’ve never been attacked for being willing to try something that might actually cure this disease. i am NOT a victim, i have tried both acupuncture AND chiropractors, i drink at least a half gallon of water a day, am a vegetarian of 14 years, do not eat junk food, and am educated enough to know that thalidomide has less side effects than most allergy medications and antidepressants. judith, while everyone is entitled to their opinion, try hard to remember that we are all on here, hopefully, to help one another. not everyone can be so pious and judgemental because we have not yet found relief.
Agreed, sb…
Judith, that was pretty harsh. Not only are the causes not all neck/back related (which would negate acupuncture/chiro manip. as a cure, not everybody’s body even among those sharing causality responds the same.
Glad something worked for you. But… I’m also glad you’re not my doctor.
I agree, Mark and sb, that we have had this malady long enough, and shared enough posts on this website, to know that we have different triggers causing the “itch” as well as different ways of finding relief.
Having Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for over 20 years, I am a veteran of trying almost any treatment that is suggested to me. Some helped, some hindered, but I I learned to be open-minded about suggestions from fellow CFS sufferers. I use the same approach now with my itching, burning, … arms. Personally, I get the most relief from ice packs & chiro treatments. ( I believe that cervical disc degeneration is the cause of my BRP.)
By the way, do any of you also have CFS? I also have fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism and arthritis.
Thanks to everyone who has shared their stories & suggestions.
One more comment – I thought everyone was driven to distraction by labels on clothing but now realize it’s part of our repertoire of symptoms.
I applaud the companies that have started producing tagless clothing.
Thanks for listening.
Ann
A victim I am, but not of my choosing. I have tried acupuncture, chiro, exercise everything topical and much to my dismay all of the prescribed rx’s that have been mentioned. We are each unique with our triggers, but still the same symptoms.
Please let us try to communicate in more compassionate ways instead of being judgemental as it negates all of our progress in working together.
We need each other to fight this and yes as much as I hate drugs, I would try the thalidomide. One has to lay awake nights in torture to understand why.
For Anne,
I’m sorry if this is old news, but Harvey Diamond wrote a book, called “Living Without Pain- Pain Relief from Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome”. As I am not American I have no feeling for whether or not this Harvey Diamond is taken seriously. But the book might be worth looking into if you have these painful diseases.

Hi everyone, I slept for a few hours and i am up, itching soooo bad, i can hardly stand it. the itching and stinging are really bad, i am not sleeping good at all, sleeping pills do nothing!!!!!!I have heard that yeast build up in your body might have alot to do with this, for some of us, I too believe all our bodies are different, so different solutions sound appropriate also!!! The Itch attacks are really dreadful to go thru, ice is the only relief i have and that somtimes takes awhile also. There is really not much to argue about,we just all need some answers, I will keep in touch and share whatever i come across with you all, i need to close for now. God bless you all, sleep softly JoAnn
A couple of thoughts on “our” itch…..
I am an RN and belong to a listserv for legal nurse consultants. There has been a conversation there about a man with an itch that sounds like ours, but all over his body. All the nurses have chimed in with ideas and thoughts. Some have suggested Atarax (hydroxyzine), or Sinequan (doxepin), and the science behind using them is very rational, but this thought was new to me.
Here it is: “If there are no contraindications, he may want to try Zantac. I have used it for itching that does not respond to H1 blockers like benadryl.I don’t know the exact physiology but since it technically is a histamine blocker, it has worked.”
I believe Zantac is sold over the counter, so it sure might not hurt to try it.
For me personally….right now….the Aloe gel slathered a couple of times a day is keeping me very comfortable. It’s cheap and I would think worth a try.
Another idea from the nurses listserv: “When I worked in hospice, we bathed those with liver cancer and end stage renal disease who had severe itching with baking soda in the bath water. It seemed to take care of the itch.” This might be worth a try too when you’re having an intense flare-up with the itch. Again, I don’t think it would hurt anyone, and it might stop the cycle.
Isn’t Zantac for heartburn?
My husband wants to know if others have the same itch pattern. It starts in mid-July on one arm, right, and doesn’t affect the left until late Sept. or Oct.
As I read and reread the posted comments, I find a lot of similarities: fair, blonde, thyroid conditions, anemia, allergies, … How is the questionaire coming and who will it be given to for help in finding a cure?
It is called Brachial pruritis. It is being researched, and has been for about 30 years. It appears to have 2 causes. One is an impinged nerve in the neck. The other cause appears to be from ultra violet light to the upper arms. Why there and nowhere else is unknown. It affects the nerves in the upper arms . The nerves return to normal after the beginning of winter. Protecting arms form to much sun seems to help. No releif or medication yet. Ice is all that works. Caspien cream doesn’t work. Most Drs. don’t know about it. Being studied. Look it up on the internet. The latest journal article on it was in the Journal of Dermatology, 2005 or 20006. We are not crazy. It has a name and is being studied.
Probably the best way to sum up this itch is….when you’ve seen one “itcher”, you’ve seen one itcher. No two seem to be exactly alike. Many similarities, but like snowflakes…no two exactly alike. My thoughts only.
I have volunteered to turn the questionnaire into a web-based link and post the link here… but somebody needs to first put it together.
The questionnaire
I don’t know how you could have missed it: Stephanie has clearly written that she has made a first draft of the questionnaire. She offered to send it to anybody who was interested and put her e-mail on here. I sent her my e-mail adress, recieved the draft right away and sent her my comments. I hope a lot of other people have done the same. She also said that she would be in Turkey for 2 weeks, so that we would have time to make our comments, and that she promised to look at them as soon as she returned which should be right around now. If you want to join in, here’s her e-mail again:
roomes@hotmail.co.uk
Mari Anne, Copenhagen
my bad, I did miss it. I will email her. I can put the survey up electronically so we can all just click on the link to complete the survey. Thanks.
ginny, there are more than two causes. mine was adult-onsite parvovirus. also, not sure the ultraviolet light thing is a cause so much as it is an irritant or “activator” to the condition.
just my take.
ginny, there are more than two causes. mine was adult-onset parvovirus. also, not sure the ultraviolet light thing is a cause so much as it is an irritant or “activator” to the condition.
just my take.
There are many, many causes of itching. I am only referring to BRP. Read the medical journal articles. Go to Pub Med. You can even email an author of the articles for further information. Parvovirus and brp are two completely different things.
*sigh*
I know they are two completely different things, obviously. And I am talking about BRP, not itching in general which as we all know can be caused by anything from dry skin to a wool sweater to itching powder.
🙂
There are many causes to BRP, not just two. And I have gone to many journals, many sites, many articles in forming this opinion. I’ve written an article too – does that make me an expert? Many messages on this site have noted that BRP is not as simple as having one or two causes or one or two cures.
There are many types of causes which fall into separate categories (dermatologic, systemic, etc). Parvovirus, or slapped-cheek syndrome (also called fifth disease due to its commonality in children among other diseases e.g. measles, chicken pox, etc), is listed in several sources as one, systemic, cause of BRP. This was confirmed recently by my physician who did some research per my request.
Please don’t try to oversimplify this, or suggest as that those without your two causes don’t have BRP. The symptomology, and its resistance to most dry-skin lotions, and its favorable reaction to the application of ice, and its seasonal and night-time appearance, is fairly consistent.
In short, it’s easy to tell if one has this condition (and I most certainly do) but I don’t think it’s accurate or useful to say “everybody who has this got it through either cause A or B.”
Hi Mark, you sound like you have done alot of research, and I think you make alot of sense to me, and probably everyone else too. I for one appreciate all your effort. I will continue to follow your e-mails on this, thank you..God bless sleep softly JoAnn
Thanks JoAnn, just trying to be accurate, I know everyone here is just trying to be helpful. Itching started again. It seems like later in the season it moves from full forearms to the upper arm, sort of the inside of the bicep area. Does anyone else note this “northward” migration during the season? Much less pins and needles this fall than last, happily. Ice at bedtime does it.
Next year I am going to pursue a Capsaicin prescription I think.
I think really hot water works much better than ice.
WOW – I had no idea this was so common. My son and daughter both suffer with this itch for many years. Both in their 30’s and living in two completely different areas in Canada (east coast and western prairies). I am going to hook them up to this site to see if they can get some relief from any of the suggestions mentioned. Doctors have tested for scabies which is crazy since thier partners haven’t come down with it!! Thanks again for all the posts
I decided to try to do some research on my itchy upperarms and was amazed, saddened and hopeful when I came across this site. I started getting itching from time to time on my left shoulder and upper arm about 2 years ago. I wish I knew about ice packs then! I tried different creams which didn’t help. Solercaine helped when my skin is broken, but ice is still the best for me. About two months ago, I developed severe itching on my right upper arm. It has bothered me daily especially in the evening and when I lie down when I go to bed.. I desperately want a solution for all of us sufferers of itching. I went to see a top notch dermotologist who took one look at me and said I should go to a Neurologist as this is not a dermalogical problem. He thinks it could be from a neck/nerve injury which is causing the problem. I think I will go see a Neurologist and continue my journey.. It perplexes me that the doctors whom I’ ve discussed my condition with seem so dumbfounded by it. Hard to believe with so many people on this site. I will check back often and post another email after I see the new docton.
I have been monitoring this site and have responded a few times. I have used ice to help at night also. Sometimes in the day when it really got bad. I researched until I found that a prescription of Zonalon cream helped tremendously and then the doc suggested that I take doxepin on a continual basis. I don’t like to take anything much more than I have to but went along with this suggestion because it had gotten to the point my arms were bloody most of the time and I was always on edge and irritable because of lack of sleep and rest. I really didn’t see how I could keep on the rest of my life with the itching as bad as it was. Well, I have been on the doxepin for a month now (50 mg – two at night before bedtime) and I have not had any peace like this for many years since the itching first started. It has really worked wonders for me. It takes a week or so to get in the system and I still itch a bit but it is only for a minute or two. I also take Clonazepam .5 mg if I start itching in the evening before bedtime. I haven’t had this kind of relief with all the creams, lotions, shots, allergy tablets, cortisone, etc that we all have tried. I tried the chiropractor also. This has worked for me and I am so grateful !!! Wanted to let all of you know. It’s easy to forget to write when you have relief. Try this and see if it will help you too. I will continue to monitor this site on occasion to check if anyone has the great results I’ve had. Good luck!!

What I have done: First, I want to say thank God for the internet!! My case (itchy shoulders) is minor compared to some here, but I can tell you that (without a doubt) I would be screwing around with dermotologists and cremes for the next 5 years trying to figure this out if it was not for this site. Whoever started it is a saint! I have now totally changed my strategy in dealing with this and man, what a huge difference! Anyway, I expect this to get worse as I get older, but for now, here is what I do: 1) I put lotion on both shoulders right after I shower. It does help. 2) I sleep on my back because if I roll on my side it is like hitting a switch that sends both shoulders into a frenzy. 3) I try to adjust the angle of my neck when I lay down. Sometimes this is very effective. Sometimes not. By this I mean I sleep with 1 pillow or 5 or somewhere in between. When I get my neck angle just right, the itching stops. 4) I take ibprofuen (only when I have to) because this whole thing is caused by swelling somewhere in the neck and if you reduce the swelling, the pressure on the nerves decrease and my itching usually goes away. 5) Ice baby! This works great, but who the hell feels like getting up at 2 in the morning to make ice bags!? Oh well, you do what you have to do. I hope this will help some of you.
JW, the Zonalon cream worked great for me, too, but I developed an allergy to the cream it’s in (it itched!). I also have the oral version (doxepin), but haven’t tried it yet. Is it the oral version/doxepin or cream Zonalon/doxepin hydrochloride that works so well for you??
John, I have also found a ‘sweet spot’ for sleeping that within 30 seconds or so stops the itch/burn/electric stabbing … on my right side, no pillow. Turns my head real hard but seems to relieve the nerve pressure. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes to find the exact spot, but it works for me.
And to all, I’ve found a new chiropractor near Nashville (Dickson) that uses new technology called a Pro-Adjustor. It’s a computerized device that NASA developed initially to test metal fatigue in bolts on airplane wings and heat tiles on space shuttles. It has been adapted for chiropractors to test and repair functionality of the spine. I’ve been going several weeks and it seems also to be helping. For info on it Google ‘Pro Adjustor’.

597 posts! I’m not alone! The itching on my arms started about 20 some years ago.Started on leftside by the wrist. Over the years it changed from side to side and was working its way upward. Some times one arm itched, sometimes both. It finally became so bad that I went to a doctor. Sounds like my story is the same as others who have this. Have been told it itches because I scratch it. If I wouldn’t scratch my arms they wouln’t itch. Yeah Right. One Doctor told me it was because I have lupus, but he offered no answer. One doctor ordered “light therapy”, (tanning bed) it does seem to help sometimes after I achieve a tan.One sugguested I needed to use certain products because my skin was so dry, and then the itching would go away. Sarna helps a little. Anything that I used only worked for a short time then stopped helping.
Hi please find below the draft of questionnaire myself and Mari Anne has put together, if anyone would like to amend/add or change any details please let me know and then it can be uploaded to Marks website for us all to complete. I will then endeavour (with anyone who would like to help) to put together the answers and then hopefully find someone to help us, I had a lovely e-mail that suggested we could try students who may need to do a project of some sort which may assist us. Anyway lets see how the below goes and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Stephanie and Mari Anne,
Please note that along with posting the survey online for us all to fill out, the program I use also automatically compiles results – as the surveys are completed. I can make the results viewable to all survey-takers.
No students required. 🙂
