With all of the talk of hurricanes this year, I know I’ve had a few conversations with people about how hurricanes are named. This site has a really good explanation of how it all works. There are six lists in rotation, and they are reused every six years. “The only time a new name is added is if a hurricane is very deadly or costly. Then the name is retired and a new name is chosen.” I wonder if Charley, Francis or Ivan will be retired now? [via Just Jill]

Hmmm… was Hugo? That’s interesting. I knew they were alphabetical, but I didn’t know they reused them.

Dumb Trivia: When John Hope (last of the Weather Channel before he died last year) was head of the National Hurricane Center in the 60s, he inserted his daughter’s name into the rotation, as was common before a permanent list was established.
His daughter wasn’t happy about it, but he told her not to worry about it, that the odds of her name becoming a bad hurricane were small.
His daughter was named Camille.

Never heard if she ever forgave him. 🙂
